based on the fact that congress overwhelmingly voted to give the President the authorization to use force in Iraq. http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/relea...0021002-2.html

Directly responsible? Of course not, that's absurd.

Indirectly responsible? Yes, we are. The country is in chaos. It is in chaos directly because of the war we waged. There were no suicide attacks or sectarian mass killings in Iraq before we got there. Now there is a political void—which we directly created—and this void catalyzes suicide bombers.

We also need to own up for creating so many civilian deaths. Every innocent Iraqi we killed is potentially a flag to be waved by extremist and terrorist recruiters. We are directly responsible for providing al-Qaeda its greatest recruiting opportunity in its entire history.
is it true that people have probably died that wouldn't have if we hadn't gone into iraq? yes, it is true. I cannot deny that. But I still don't blame any US citizen for the deaths of those who died because some religious zealot strapped a bomb to his chest and set if off at a grocery store or some other public place. The blame for those deaths rests solely on the "insurgent".

Let's follow the logic then: Deaths of innocents in ware are not the result of the circumstances they are in, but of the individual soldier, sailor, marine, or airman.

Similarly, would you defend a police officer who did not act to stop a crime he could have prevented? What if he aggrivated the situation?

Then, of course, are the deaths we ourselves caused during the process of opressing and torturing the population of non-insurgents who are now the insurgency.
