Edumacate me on the Subaru Impreza

I'm casually looking at buying an Impreza.
Models I'm considering (used) are the Outback Sport, RS2.5, and WRX.
High performance is not the primary buying factor although a measure of "sportiness" is desired.
An STi is way outside the budget and not something that a person prone to speeding tickets needs to be driving, imho so it need not be mentioned.

So, anyone have any opinions on the compact Subies that they'd like to share?

don't buy one you plan to mod, unless it's the Sti. I've heard the other's have butter for transmissions... and you sound like you might drive your cars hard (me 2). If you plan on keepin it stock (even with just simple bolt-ons) you'd be straight... but don't make a build list and expect the transmission to be reliable (unless again, it's the Sti)

that's a/b all I know of them... but I do think they're purdy

Hmm, besides boxer engines sounding funny to me, and the already stated fact that non-STI transmissions make DSM trannys look solid, decent cars I suppose. I'd never own one but hey, more power to you.

Dave, talk to Reuben (OlsonAcoustic) on CMF. He's got a WRX and is something of a Subbie fanboy.

That's right! I had forgotten that he has a collection of Subarus.
Thanks, Steve.

I fail to see how a short throw shifter makes an entire car good.

Having recently had the opportunity to drive an STi for about 100 miles, I would say that any of the lesser Subarus would still be fun cars to drive. However, please at least get a WRX, or for that matter, one of my friends is selling his STi for 22,600.....

mate subarus are the way. apart from being common as anything imprezas are nice cars. built tough with all the goods inside. we had 2 libertys, never had a problem. both made 400,000km easy. obviously sold for an upgrade. ive driven a few imprezas and havent encountered a dodgy transmission, they are rally cars so they have to be strong. althought theres always a dud.
cheers, salt&light... btw im new

Yeah, if I put one on my truck, my 0-60 time might just dip below 12 seconds. I don't think my shifter is the limiting factor.
