Well, that's fine, but I'd be really grateful if you gave me the liberty to use the term "influence" in a way that fits with the dictionary and common usage and describes a very real factor of music.

Not even remotely. I'm tired of being treated the way I get treated in here simply for approaching music the way a normal person approaches music.

Contrary to popular belief, I'm intelligent. I'm not some idiot who just bumbled in and has never given a thought to music or the way he speaks. I said what I meant, and I meant what I said, and I'm sick of people telling me what I did or didn't mean or that I can't use terms in a certain way or that I can't judge artists based on certain merits.

Go for it...I was largely being sarcastic. I should've tried to make that more apparent. FWIW, we're probably in the same boat alot of the time in this forum.

After some of the recent comments I've gotten (and more than doubling my number of -UCs in less than a week), it would've been really appreciated.

A noble effort, but I don't see this being a fruitful thread.
I don't think any of the recent spat of "Best _______ of all time" threads will turn out to be very useful. We've seen them all before anyways.

Hendrix is so overrated. I mean, yeah the man was a pioneer, but that doesn't make him the best of all time.

He's not that overrated. Sure, he may not be that talented technically, but when it comes to playing blues, playing with feeling, and playing for the song and not to show off, really, there's no one better.

Indeed, and when you've had a large segment of a generation claiming you as inspiration, it says something about your greatness.

Of course (and this may open a can of worms), but should Kurt Cobain be on the list? By no means was he a technically proficient guitarist, but he had something that drew people into his music.

I think, if we're including guitarists who played for the song and were excellent songwriters in that aspect, then there'd be no reason to leave him off.

Having seen him play, he did show off. I mean, burning, throwing guitars on the ground, playing with his teeth and behind his head and wielding it like a gun were all part of the act. While he was good and he had good songs, he did not play very cleanly and sometimes he hit some clams. If those three criteria are to be applied, the best guy for me would be Clapton. I've seen a lot of Clapton live and have yet to hear him hit a wrong note.

I think with Cobain, though, it was more the music as a whole that was influential, not so much the guitar specifically. Certainly, his guitar technique was influental, but not on the same level as Hendrix's.

Robert Johnson should have at least been mentioned.
