TASCAM DP01 All-In-One Recording Package

I know this is the second thread i've made on this recorder, but this time I am more so asking about the mic, speakers and stuff it comes with, and if you think its worth it to get this package rather than the recorder by itself ( http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...dio?sku=241106 )and buying mics, cords, speakers separate.

I don't know much about the mic, but most people I talk with tend to like M Audio monitors pretty well. If you're getting the recorder, then I'd say go ahead and get it. If you're still on the fence about it, I'd say that's a lot to pay for some entry level monitors and a cheap mic.

Well I really want to get that recorder, and I mean by the time I pay for it and shipping (I live in Canada) its gonna be pretty pricey, so I just want to make sure its worth it.
What would the moniters even be used for?

Monitors are a very important part of your signal chain. Consumer grade speakers are designed to emphasize bass and treble response. Studio grade monitors are designed to accurately represent the recorded sound. If it sounds good without any coloration, it will sound good on just about any system it is played on.

K, that seems a little foggy for me, like do i actually need the speakers to record?

You can record yes, but you may run into problems with mixing without them. If you mix on a home stereo system that has emphasized bass, your mixed track will be severely lacking bass which in turn will screw up your entire EQ. I usually recomend people buy at least a nice pair of headphones (at least 100 dollars or more that are designed for studio use), but if you have the opportunity to get a decent pair of monitors for around what you were planning on spending, I'd say go ahead.

I know you get less stuff, but for the same price, you can get a presonus Firepod. You would have 8 tracks you could record separately at once...the only thing is that you need a decent computer to push it.

It also comes bundled with software, not the best, but better than the free stuff.

He's pretty set on getting the recorder if I remember correctly. I believe we already suggested using a computer as the center of the system, but I'm pretty sure he wanted something completely separate. I could have this confused with another thread though..

Also, on the mixer, the preamps would not be as good as on a seperate interface, but you really can't beat the versatility and portability of a standalone recorder.

We used to use a Fostex VF16 for recording, but we rented an Alesis mixer for the pres, as the preamps on the VF16 weren't that good. BUT, the VF16 also let you record 8 tracks at once.

Its going to be about the same cost. I'd really recommend this over what your looking at. This will open up possibilites later if you want to have more than 2 tracks recording at once...which is all the tascam recorder your looking at will allow.

yeha, i was pretty set on getting the tascam, but i am still open to suggestions if you think one is better.
The seller for that item is selling it cause its too confusing, i'd probably be pretty confused with it too.

I need something that will be able to record something, liek the rhythm for a song say (on guitar). Then if i can go over it and put lead gutiar on it, then go over again and put bass, drums, etc.

I don't think i need too much extras, i'm not exactly rich either, everything i will be buying is out of my own earned cash.

I'm a begginner at recording, i plan to make demos of songs, but i want a good recording quality, so i can make a "album" and sell them or something like that.

but yeah, my computer is jsut an XP, and we can't afford better right now, and when we do update, i don't know if it would be good enough for the fostex, if it needs good computering.

that is definetly pricey, but the equipment it comes with looks better quality than the tascam package, but i think this set is out of my range money wise.
but what do you think of the extras in this pack compared to the tascam?

i found that too, cheaper, mic looks better.
But this recorder is a little diff, does it do the same as the DP01 and more?
I mean i know it has effects installed, but its the same as the other one , jsut with the option of built in effects?
i'm sorry, i'm really amature at this recording stuff.

i looked at the features myself, and realized, the effects one has everything the other one has, plus some more (effects)
so, now i'm looking at that one more.

The major difference is the latest one you linked to has a CD burner installed in it so you can master directly to a CD. That's a lot easier than transferring to your computer in the case of most recorders I've worked with.
