| If you want a synth then about as cheap as they come is $400 for a table-top synth keyboard (Alesis Micron, Micro Korg, Xiosynth). That's a stand-alone synth that doesn't need to be plugged into a computer or anything. A much cheaper alternative is to get a MIDI controller keyboard and use it with your computer. If you've got a Mac then you're already all set because you've got Garage Band and can use the instruments included with it and control them with the MIDI controller. Otherwise you might want to get some other sort of software like Reason or Ableton Live to go with it.
