live amp?

hey

i want to get a new amp for live work. i've never played my electric live through an amp though. basically i want to mic the amp on stage, then send it through a PA. its not any really large venue stuff but i want a smaller amp that i can lug around everywhere without too much trouble. how many watts do i need, and any suggestions on what amp?

thanks
mike

This needs to be moved to amps.

As for your question, we need more info. How big (give examples) is your venue(s)? What type of music do you play? What guitar(s) do you have? Do you have a price limit? What is it? Info info info!

I am thinking Peavey Classic 30, or maybe Fender Blues jr.

Hmmm...you know thats always the suggestion. Peavey Classic 30 or blues jr.

I disagree. You need something Vox-ish. Vox AD50VT maybe? Idk, it works for me in worship and I play in the same size crowd in church. Its a modeler, so you can get multiple sounds out of it.

yeah i was looking at vox. i've seen that a lot of great artists use it, both live and studio. i tried one in the store a while ago on a godin, but not a fender. either way it was a good sound. any other ideas?

Vox is really the only thing I can think of. Its well suited for single coil guitars because of its superior low end. Anyone else know?

My son has used a 60 watt Johnson Amplification JM60 for years now and he sounds very good. You can only get one used now, but it's kept value (surprisingly). A used one is within your price range, is loud enough and he uses it mic'd. Do not confuse this one with the amps being put out by Johnson - it has to say Johnson Amplification. It's kind of a hybrid SS amp with a 12AX7 preamp tube.

I've heard the Palomino line is quite decent for the price and the fact that it is a tube amp. I used to play electric through a Marshall acoustic amp that I had bought for my acoustic electric. I ended up giving that one away because I found that acoustic amps are not very well voiced for playing the electric guitar, unless you get something like a Rivera Sedona which is made especially to do both. Get an electric guitar amp and you will be much happier.

you know, the fender blues jr. is a great amp that would be great for worship, I agree that vox makes some nice amps, however, modeling is not for everyone, so perhaps something else would be better suited. And, addressing your previous post, venue size has little to no impact on the amp size requirement because, as Mike said, he plans on mic'ing the amp, so it doesn't matter if it is only a 5 watt class A amp with 112 speaker, volume is not really an issue.

I use my amp as a monitor and mic it at the same time, so then volume would become an issue.

k, well mike just said he wanted to mic his, even still, as a monitor you really don't need more than 10-30 watts, depending on your speakers.

and still then, if you are using it just as a monitor then the venue size still makes no difference in how much wattage you need. Perhaps it would be dependent upon how loud the other instruments are, or whatever, but venue size makes NO difference. For instance, I play at my church on sunday mornings, it has about 500 members, I mic my amp, but I do use it as a monitor and the I want a clean sound, so I use a 50 watt amp, but on one sunday evening a month I play a college and career service of over 3000 members, and mic up. I just have my guitar piped back through a wedge or In-ears so I just have an 18 watt boutique amp.

And your volume really comes from the PA, so even 5 watts would do.
