Indian music anyone?

Hindustani music is just about some of my favorite music. Anyone else listen to any nice Ragas now and then?

Recently I have been listening to a good bit of Ustad Sultan Khan. The Sarangi is such a great instrument.

I knew someone who would always listen to Ravi Shankar. Personally, I just can't stand Middle-Eastern music.
That, and I read that Indian music is used by New Age religions to put one in a trance.

Ravi Shankar is only the tip of the ice berg. I guess you either like it or it just grates on your ears.

I listen to Ravi every once in a while. Any others you could suggest for me to check out?

I would look into an album called Venu by the Rykodisc label it has Hariprasad Chaurasia playing a beautiful Indian flute called the Bansuri and Zakir Hussain on tabla (only one of the greatest tabla players alive). It can normally be had for about $12 and is one of my favorite Indian discs.

Depending on instrument I would check out

Sitar - Nikhil Banerjee
Bansuri - Hariprasad Chaurasia
Sarangi - Ustad Sultan Khan
Sarod - Ali Akbar Khan

and if you are into emphasis on percussion the Tabla players

Zakir Hussain and Ustad Alla Rakha.
