| Did you know that it is actually impossible to watch Episodes I-VI? I tried one time and the digital effects make the last three look like a home video.

| Jerry, while I agree that this movie plagiarizes Star Wars, I think it more heinously plagiarizes LoTR and Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea books.
I say this because Star Wars itself is hardly original. I don't think Star Wars is a great movie for its plot, I think it's great because it takes these stories and archetypes we've all already heard and puts them in a completely new and creative setting. It wasn't sci-fi, it wasn't fantasy, it was this weird mix of the two that was unlike anything anything had ever seen, and that breathtakingly original world is what makes Star Wars a great movie more than anything else.
I don't have that big of a problem with Eragon rehashing Star Wars' traditional hero plot. My problem is that the kid unapologetically rips off almost every aspect of Tolkien's world, and to boot, unapologetically plagiarizes Ursula Le Guin's magic from her Earthsea books. We have fair skinned archer elves with magical powers who live in remote woods. We have armor crafting dwarves. We have deformed malevolent creatures in the employ of the bad guy except they're called Urgals instead of Orcs. The magic—based on the power of words and names—is identical to the magic in Earthsea, complete with a mystic language. I think the only original thing the kid thought of are the creepy bird creatures (who were creepy bug creatures in the movie).
I think you're allowed to rehash plots, but not worlds. |

| I would never have noticed the ripoffs in Eragon if I hadnt read this thread...
I thought it was an ok movie, but like Jerry said earlier, no character development, and no explanation of events going on in the movie.
Also, I was confused, aswell, by the "I can wear Armor but I Cant Carry 3 people thing". That made no sense at all.
Also, the movie didnt end where it shouldve, unless they plan on making a second one. Loose ends bug me in movies when they have no intention of making another movie.

| They are planning 3 movies.
I honestly feel that it was cookie-cut "LotR was a fantasy movie in three parts and did great, therefore what the public wants is three-part fantasy movies".
I've seen that pattern over and over in the entertainment industry. Tomb Raider did well as a game because it was fun and what meesage did video game companies get? "Big boobs sell games".
How copy-cat is the industry? Every set of movies here came out within 12 months of the rest of the set:
Real Genius, Weird Science, My Science Project.
Mission to Mars, Red Planet.
Deep Impact, Armageddon.
Leviathin, Deep Star 6, The Abyss.
Dante's Peak, Volcano.
Crimson Tide, Hunt for Red Octorber.
The list goes on and on. What other movies have you seen in any of these generes (OK, the 70s had disaster flicks)? When will the entertainment industry learn that what we like is "good stories well presented"?!?
LotR did well because it was GOOD. It was in three movies because they story was that long (actually, I would have preferred 6 2+ hour movies). Eragon either needed a rewrite or that frst movie should have been streched into a couple (in order to develop characters, give a sense of time passage, and connect the events... but mostly develop characters) |

| That's probably one of hte more absurd things I"ve ever read. I would argue that the digital effects make I-III look like a video game. They do nothing to IV-VI. |

Even though I like I - III, I think the lack of digital effects in IV - VI make them look more realistic.
________
Jerry, I doubt that there will be a 2nd movie. But if they do infact manage to make another one, hopefully they will do a better job (not likely, but still...).

| This isn't a thread to say which is your favorite; it's pointing out how Eragon blatantly ripped off Star Wars. |

Go back to the first post of the thread, and look at the comparisons that JerryLove posted.
Its obvious that Eragon ripped off starwars, and from some of the other comments made, ripped off LotR aswell.
I liked Eragon, but even I have to admit that there were blatant rip-offs in that movie.
