Some of the men of previous generations, as well as this one, are indeed lazy.

Um... Women too.

But really, I don't think that the stereotypes are necessarily based on men being lazy, but on what was interpreted as the proper functions of a household. What I mean is men go to work, make a living and women stay home, keep house and take care of the kids. Things are different today but the stereotypes remain. (Although if me or my wife didn't work, I would probably expect that person to do most of the work around the house).
