Clean Patch vs Overdriven

Hey guys. Im a regular in our church as a guitarist/play every sunday and for ever function imanigable. Being the only guitarist sometimes has its ups and downs for doing worship. Im just wondering how some of you guys utizilze different patches while being the only guitarist/even backup. Im wondering how you/other people/cds/individual artists/LINCOLN BREWSTER! will have a cleaner type patch for the verses and or pre-chorus, and then all of a sudden have a really good overdrive patch to build the chorus type thing. Do you understand what i mean? Im just wondering if this is possible to do with 1 guitar. The transition when ive tried it just sounds horrible because its soo sudden.

C.

I just bring an acoustic guitar. Electric just never seemed like a good solo instrument to me.

Ya, i know. I do the same too, but there are times when worship leader wants me to play my electric because we are doing fast/upbeat songs. and it sounds so much nicer with an electric.

I guess it would depend on your gear. I generally use a bunch of different sounds when playing. I have my clean sound, a slightly overdriven sound, and a real heavy sound. With my guitar set-up, I use different pickup configurations and adjust the volume knob accordingly, in order to achieve even more tonal variety in playing. I always believe that the overdriven sound needs to compliment the clean sound. That's why I'm not a big fan of "Metallica-type" distortion sounds. To me, it's an exaggerated distortion sound. Depending on the song, transitioning from clean to overdrive should never be extremely sudden. Going from slightly dirty to dirty may be what you want to do.

I will occasionally change patches (well, really I just stomp on a mode-switch for my amp) from clean to a light crunch during a song. I will usually not do this at random points in the song, but if there is a bridge where things escalate, I will switch tones and then come back in unobtrusively and continue playing. Often when I'm the only guitar on electric guitar, I'll play the whole song (provided it fits the song) with a slightly crunchy tone.

I use a clean patch most of the time. I also add in lots of reverb and delay to add more substance.

I use my trusty looper for those repetitive songs. I record the rhythm and play some lead patterns over that.

There's four of us that play each week; a pianist, and three of us that either play the cello, elect piano, bass or guitar. I'm usually on the guitar. btw.
