The LC series would do nicely with a little help (pedal/pickups).

You could look at Ashdowns, but in general, I think you're going to find it hard to find a non-marshall small amp in that price range that does quality metal tones, especially if you are more of bedroom player.

How about getting a POD and some decent headphones?
