Orange AD140tc or VOX AC30 CC212

Hey guys...I got a used Orange AD140tc head a couple of weeks ago...and there are no words to describe this thing...!!! The only bad is that I have to lug this thing around with my cab and it was pricey too...Should I "downgrade" to Vox AC30 since I wont be needing the power that the orange provides? I'm going on evangelistic medical missions this summer so I will be needing money(I wouldnt have bought the Orange should I have known I was going on the missions for sure)... O yeah...what's your take on Vox AC30...I play p&w stuff...similar to the tones of Chris TOmlin's music...

Thanks bro's in Christ!!

i don't like modern Vox's personally, but a lot of people love them.. umm... i don't know what you paid for it or how much you could get out of the head (due to condition), but i bet you could downgrade to a AD30 combo.. also that 140 gives you a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot of clean head room....

good luck on your missions...

yeah, you could get a used AD30 or AD50 combo for that... better IMO than a Vox..

Neither are better or worse. They're both really good.

The Orange has a darker tone though, while the Vox has a lot brighter tone. Get what suits you best and what you like best. For what it's worth, when I was deciding between the two, I chose the AC30. The Orange sounded pretty good with a guitar like a Tele, but I've tried a Rockerverb with a Les Paul and I didn't really like it as much. The AC30 sounds great with both.

yeah that's why i said IMO.. but also IMO the quality of VOX's aren't even a shade of what they were in the 70's....

Vox's AC30...*sigh* Many would be suprised at what I'd do to get my hands on one. Wonderful amp, I played pne through a Gibson Firebird and a Fender Jaguar and both sounded wonderful. Darker than Orange, I hear. I've personally never played through an Orange.

This negatively affected my tone in ways that I just can't describe.
Then, on a whim, a few years ago I wandered into a Bath and Body Works store at a local mall and picked up some of their gentle foaming anti-bacterial hand cleansers.
The difference in my guitar's sound is so wickedly improved that I no longer feel the need to buy a new amp or pedals or even strings...EVER!
So, it's my belief that tone is in the soap.
Thank you and goodnight.

Right, I know you said IMO. My point would be, at least in terms of tone, your opinion is wrong. You may like one better, but it doesn't make it better. The difference between what you and I are saying is that you're saying, in your opinion, the Orange is better. I'm saying, neither are better, but I like the Vox tone.

Definitely not darker than Orange. On my Vox, I always cut a lot of the highs. If I had a Tele, I'm sure I could cut some people's heads off if I let more of the highs go through.

Wait, do you already have a buyer? Dang it! btw, those heads fun 2k new, so you got quite a deal. And Orange offers a lot the Vox can't do: thick, creamy gain with a unique crunch.

The vox's are definitly brighter, and are used more as a clean amp that can be pushed with a pedal for great distortion. In your situation, that AD140 is just too much power and headroom. You really need to crank it, but the MV works really good. One reason I like the AD series so much.

btw, Rockverb's are known to work great with LP's -- well, nicer ones with some clear pick-ups. The AD's love Tele's.

So . . . you already found a buyer?!?

In my opinion the tone on the Orange is better than the tone on the Vox.. as far as reliablility i'd say that the Orange is better, as far as looks, the orange is cooler... as far as versatility, the Orange is definately got the vox beat...

Vox's have very colored tones, which is one reason why a bunch of people love them, but is also why i can't stand the newer vox's... Also the reason that there's very little versatility... The old vox's from the 70's had a really cool sound (think Queen), but modern vox's don't sound the same...

So in my opinion the Orange is better than the Vox..

I mean Vox's aren't bad, but they aren't wonderful... their quality isn't what it used to be... but they aren't bad...

Right. I understand the words your saying. I understand that it is your opinion that the Vox's tone is not as good as an Orange. I also understand that you're making an objective statement and trying to qualify it and curb it's edge by adding the subjective "IMO". I'm just trying to point that out to you, and that your opinion is wrong. You may prefer Orange. You may dislike Vox. But in terms of quality of tone, both are good enough that they get in to subjective territory as to which one will like or dislike. But you cannot say one is better, no matter if that's your opinion or not. They both have great tone but are distinctively different from each other. If you disagree with me, then fine. I'll still say that you're wrong. In terms of reliability and versatility, you have a better case. But looks and tone? C'mon.

what looks cooler than orange tolex? i mean really... it's a definate attention getter... It's bright, pleasing to the eye, sharp, but not too sharp that it offends the eye...

Vox's are pretty dull.

and you can't say my opinion is wrong, because then you are imposing your subjective opinion as an objective fact, which it is not...
