| Alright guys thanks for the advice...I'm not sure what I'm going to get yet..I'll probably get the guitar and effects first.
My guitar teacher thought I should just get the head unit to start out with, are there any additional details dealing with just the head?
thanks,
chester

chester | If it's a tube head you will need a cabinet of usable impedance (same or higher). Failure to do so will reduce your tubes to nothing and blow your power transformer.
Most SS heads, don't do that...but some will. |

| 50 watt Orange Rockverb. Blow away anything previously listed, though the 5150's are really good. Ofcourse, tone is subjective. It will also blow away your wallet though . . .
Check out the site: www.orangeamps.com and go to the forum if you want some sound clips. I like finding clips of amps and then trying amps out. Do research.
Problem with good amps, like Orange, Bogner and 5150's, you won't find them in your guitar 'warehouse' shops. Just keep looking. You need to play on one though and mess with it. You'll be converted.
Tubes will thicken your tone and give it punchy, raunchy sounds all the while warming your highs. Very good. Very loud. PODxtl is great for PA set ups, recording or using with a tube cleaner amp, like a Fender Hot Rod.
However, it is not as realistic as the real thing. But its a good start. Depending on how serious you are, maybe start in this direction and work up. They are great in church settings where volume is a factor. Good luck.
about the head: you'll need a cab like thesteve said. And please research before you go out and buy effects because: good tube boutique amps will NOT like you if you feed them digital stuff like the POD. Like I said, if you go with a cleaner, tube HRD, you can get away with it.
Friends at line6 ( http://line6.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb....c&f=3&t=020936) are going with Atomic amps ( http://www.atomicamps.com/) btw.
You are at a crossroads: go digital with all-in-one effect boxes, amp modellers, or buy the real thing. Mixing the two can have adverse reactions.

chester | i would reccomend you get the amp before the effects, and if you have a usable guitar, amp then new guitar...

| Ok, well I was looking at Marshall head units, and I found this one that looks decent: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ead?sku=482634
50 watts, less that 500, all the basic features and amp should have. It's a solidstate, but right now my playing tone is kind of compatible with solidstate because that's what I currently use. What do you people think?

| i think you'd be happier with a tube amp than that one, i mean as far as SS goes, marshall's pretty crappy...

-chester | With a POD, I think the difference between tube and SS is a little less significant, if you're using the POD as a preamp.
EDIT: What I want as a setup when I have the money is: POD XT>Crate Powerblock>Cab.
You might want to look into it. The Powerblock is supposedly a pretty good SS "head", I guess. I don't think it's a conventional head, which is why it's in quotes.

| I would definitely try before you buy. I know the AVT series amps I've played before have had decent distortion, but I can't remember much about the clean channel. They've got one of those love/hate reputations.
btw guys...this thing is "hybrid"
I'll also add that to go with this unit you're going to need a cab as well. They do make combo models in the AVT line so you might look into those. Either way, I'd definitely check out the used market, you can get alot more amp for $450. After re-reading the description of the tone you wanted, you could probably get a used Peavey Valveking in that range and be able to get it to do what you want. |
