If that can't keep up with your band, you need to lower your stage volume and preserve your hearing. For real.

And there's no reason why you can't mic a 1x12 and pipe it into your monitor.
The argument isn't so much volume as it is spread. Sure, a good, efficient 1x12 can put out 120db or more...but it's going to be much more directional than a 2x12 or 4x12 would be, and due to phyiscal limitations it's not going to necessarily carry as far.

Many guys who run quality modelling units (POD/GNX/GT) will use keyboard or PA amp to get good amplification over a wide frequence range without coloration.

Also, as for stack and amp size...point the friggin thing at your head and use a small amp and speaker configuration. Really, I know its hard for most guitarists to grasp...but, you're not supposed to see how much stage noise you can spill out into the world...let the PA do its job. And if your rehearsal mates can't function without 100 watt stacks, find a band with some brains and hasn't destroyed their hearing yet...

As nice as the PA argument is, PAs aren't cure-alls. Alot of places don't even have PAs for any other purpose than amplifying the vocals. All you've got to provide sound to the audience is whatever is on stage, unless you bring your own PA for it.

Sigh...is CGR really turning into a "bash everyone that doesn't use little amps" and accessories forum?

it would at least be rather close-minded.
