One trick that I learned from my layout and design course this spring is to draw or sketch your design before going to the computer. When you go straight to the computer, you usually fall into one of two mindset traps: 1) "Oh my gosh! So many options! What should I do?!? I guess I'll just keep it nice and simple!" or 2) "Ok... text box here, text box there, graphic over here... now let's scan through all the fonts and find a fun one... that's about all that this program can really do, I guess."

Neither of those is helpful. When you sketch something out first, you won't be overwhelmed or shackled by what you think your software can or cannot do. Instead, you'll be focused on designing what you want, and then, when you finally go to the computer, you'll have a much easier time getting that perfect design.
