i understand that it takes skill to stay in rhythm and that would suggest musicial gift "recognizing and staying in rhythm." but it's like, if all i can play on guitar is smoke on the water yet i can do it while bungee jumping and other 's can't ... that makes me a great guitarist [instead of someone with remarkable balance and physical skill / showman]?
as far as fast solos does not equal greatness. i agree that simply having speed is not enough, just as in football, just being a fast wide receiver isn't enough to be great [former denver bronco Ashley Lelie, for ex.]. But at the same time, it's really difficult to not be a great wide receiver and not have some speed involved. You can't really be slow but you at least need average speed - Wayne Chebret, Hines Ward, Keyshawn Johnson, Darrell Jackson, etc.
playing with speed is not the be all end all, but it is an indicative factor of what would make someone great at playing guitar. |
You forgot Steve Largent.
But, you are right about what makes a guitar player great, especially in the context of the thread which is, who is the most talented Christian guitar player. You will never see Phil Keaggy rely on gimmicks other than his guitar playing and singing when he performs. And, a lot of times, he is by himself. Of course, he's not the only one, but he is among the first to come to mind. Plus, he is not one dimensional in his playing which covers many styles. Now, that's talent! |

| I heard that someone once asked Jimi Hendrix how it felt to be the greatest guitar player in the world and he said,"I don't know, maybe you should ask Phil Keaggy". |

That's a rumor that isn't true.

| Phil Keaggy is obviously the most talented Christian guitarist. Case closed.
OTHER than Keaggy, my vote would go to 3 guys:
Ben Kasica - Skillet (sick man, just sick)
Thomas Daugherty - The Elms (you won't understand this unless you see them live)
Joseph Milligan - Anberlin (absolutely unbelievable... just watch the concert here to see what I mean.) |
