Jon Star from Becoming The Archetype is an amazing guitarist. He left around the beginning of this year though. Alex from Aletheian replaced him and he is also a very amazing lead guitarist.

He definitely is nuts! I saw a live video of him and Underoath. He was slinging that guitar in every direction, even over his head, and still staying in perfect rhythm with the song.

That doesn't make you talented if you can swing your guitar. Tim is probly okay but not that great compared to most other guitarists. IMO the real talent comes in when you can very fast solos(in heavier music).

I'm guessing you didn't read everything I said. I said that not only was he able to swing it in every direction, but he was also able to keep up with the rhythm of the song perfectly while doing so. There's a difference.

I'll take your word for it.

Edit: On second thought I'll just keep out of this thread.

maybe that means more of a great showman. but in the end, guitar playing is about the ability to play guitar not juggle it. That does not mean that being a guitar aerobo acrobat does not have its own value.

For example, robert fripp is considered a legendary guitar player/musician but just sits the whole time during his performances. And george lynch was one of my favorite guitar players but absolutely boring to watch live, just standing in one place with his head looking at the fretboard the whole concert pretty much.

Sounds like I would much more enjoy, as well as photog, Tim live [man, that's on my list. I so hope to get a chance to photog underoath]. But being entertaining to watch live and tossing a guitar around and catching it in rhythm does not replace the fretboard, chording, soloing or rhythmic skill of Lynch or Fripp.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. Fast solos are cool and all, but the real talent comes when you are able to do something truly unique. As cool as fast metal solos are, just about every metal band is doing them nowadays.

i think this is a good issue - what constitutes being "great."

when it comes to playing guitar, then i am not sure how swinging the guitar ='s playing great guitar. to me if you are calling someone a great guitarist than playing ability is the issue. If you are calling someone a great showman, great live, etc., than swinging while staying in rhythym is the issue.

i understand that it takes skill to stay in rhythm and that would suggest musicial gift "recognizing and staying in rhythm." but it's like, if all i can play on guitar is smoke on the water yet i can do it while bungee jumping and other 's can't ... that makes me a great guitarist [instead of someone with remarkable balance and physical skill / showman]?

as far as fast solos does not equal greatness. i agree that simply having speed is not enough, just as in football, just being a fast wide receiver isn't enough to be great [former denver bronco Ashley Lelie, for ex.]. But at the same time, it's really difficult to not be a great wide receiver and not have some speed involved. You can't really be slow but you at least need average speed - Wayne Chebret, Hines Ward, Keyshawn Johnson, Darrell Jackson, etc.

playing with speed is not the be all end all, but it is an indicative factor of what would make someone great at playing guitar.
