Something to bring us Aussies and New Zealanders together!

Apparently there are murmours that South Africa will be stripped of the 2010 Soccer World Cup and it will go to a combination of Australia and New Zealand.

What do you guys reckon the chances are?

Wow! It will be a very sad day if that happens for South Africa because it is a beautiful country, but the crime is terrible.

I don't think NZ has teh facilities or government to handle a world cup. We just coped with having the America's cup! It was excellent for our economy though!

According to the article, Australia and New Zealand have got enough big enough stadiums to host a world cup.

This is what im thinking:

Sydney:
Telstra Stadium
Sydney Cricket Ground

Melborune:
MCG
Telstra Dome

Brisbane:
Gabba

WA:
The new one being built in Perth

I'm not sure what ther is in NZ but apparently they are upgrading a whole lot.

I'm American and have little love for soccer/football (it's just not my sport), but I'd hate, for their sake, to see it stripped from South Africa.

I very much doubt it will happen. It is the kind of thing that gets talked about every single major sporting event. Greece was going to lose the Olympics etc etc... it gets talked about but never happens, it is too much of a logistical nightmare to change venues like that.

They are apparently building an enormous stadium on the Gold Coast at present. About 20 minutes walk from my house actually. Perhaps that's a possibility.

Ahh that will be for the new Rugby League team going up there. I'm not sure how many that seats, but apparently it should be ready for 2008. Is that Carrara (or something like that)?

Hmm. I'm really not a fan of soccer at all, so this whole deal really doesn't move me. Not even from an economical sense, because everything primarily would be held in Aussie

I mean, it's great for Aussie, not so much for New Zealand

Yeah i think a lot of the major matches would be in Australia, although it would still probably take 10's of thousands of tourists to New Zealand.

Like i said, i still think it is very unlikely to happen. (It would make the games far more watchable.... no more 2am starts.)
