mandolin searching...

I see that some other people are also looking into playing a mandolin... but the suggestions posted are not in my price range. Does anyone have suggestions for one that's not expensive but sounds good and has good action?
I play guitar and I just thought it would be fun! (especially since i like bluegrass)

I would suggest going to a used music store. HTey usually have one or two and try it out. You usually can got one that you like at a decent price.

I think a Rogue (ick) or maybe a used Epiphone, Kentucky, or Johnson are your choices at that level.

quality = price

if you live in a bluegrass area then the price will be lower as there will be more around.

remember that the necks can be REALLY skinny so the strings are really close together.

I bought an Antinori mando from Ebay and though it was a reasonable quality instrument I couldn't get my fingers onto it!!!

I ended up making myself one...... then one for someone else....... then two more for me!!!!! all with wider necks.

(there's one in the classifieds at the minute.........

I started off with a Johnson a style mandolin. I got it free with a $99 guitar off of www.musiciansfriend.com . I have moved on to the better quality mandolins since, but I still "pick" it up every now and again for memories sake.

I've got "fatish" fingers too and it some getting used to the thinner neck, but after some practice you will get used to it too.
