My Hermeneutics Exam!!

Just thought I'd share with you what I'm fretting over tonight This is the test, I have to memerize all of it:

Five Divisions of the book of Psalms
Psalm 1-41
Psalm 42-72
Psalm 73-89
Psalm 90-106
Psalm 107-150

Eight Types of Psalms and an example
Torah – 1, 31
Laments – 51
Hymns – 95
Storytelling – 105
Liturgical – 15
Trust – 23
Song of Zion – 46
Royal – 2

Difference Between Revelation and other Writings
1. Writer is inspired by God
2. Author is named, where other writings use pseudonyms.
3. Revelation predicts the future while others appear to do so.
4. Revelation is not ethically passive.
5. Revelation is hopeful, not pessimistic.

Two Types of Old Testament Wisdom and an example
Orthodox – Proverbs
Questioning – Ecclesiastes

Figures of Speech in the Bible
Metaphor – comparison of unlike things.
Simile – comparison of unlike things using like or as.
Metonymy – Idea is evoked or named by means of a term designating some associated Notation. May be cause and effect.
Synecdoche – A more inclusive term is used for a less inclusive term or vice versa.
Apostrophe – Writer addresses directly things or persons absent or imaginary.
Personification – Non-living thing receives life like characteristics.
Hyperbole – Exaggeration
Interrogation – A question.
Irony – Opposite of what it means. Used for emphasis.

Types of Parallelisms in Hebrew Poetry
Synonymous – Second line repeats or reinforces first.
Antithetical – Second line emphasizes the first by contrast.
Synthetic – Thought of first line is completed in second line.
Climatiz – Second line repeats part of the first and then adds new thought.

Dos and Don’ts in interpreting Old Testament Law
-Do see OT law as God’s word. Don’t see it as God’s direct command to you.
-Do see OT law as basis for the OC and part of Israel’s history. Don’t see it as binding on Christians except where specifically stated.
-Do see God’s justices, love and high standards. Do not forget to see God’s mercy is made equal to the standards.
-Do not see the OT law as complete legislation. It does not cover every possible situation.
-Do not expect OT law to be cited frequently by prophets or in the New Testament. Do remember that the essence of the law is repeated by the prophets and renewed in the NT.
-Do see the OT law as a generous gift to Israel bringing much blessing when obeyed. Don’t see it as a group of arbitrary annoying regulations.

The Nature of New Testament letters
1. NT letters are occasional. Written to specific places, people, etc..
2. These letters represent only certain instance of the lives of the apostles.
3. The letters are not each components of the others.
4. The words and usages are to be defined contextually.
5. The letters are systematic treatments.
6. Modern readers and original hearers are separated by culture.
7. No one letter can be used as a yardstick for all NT theology.
8. NT letter are homogenous in style. They are totally different.
