| No, they're not really. See my most recent post. It certainly doesn't have the same "coolness" factor as one of the more modern guitar-ish-shaped keytars, but it has a real monosynth engine built-in (instead of just a bunch of samples... or, no sound at all like most keytars), and it will allow you mobility on stage (it has strap-buttons, and you can add the little grip thing). Remember... you're only going to sound as good as your actual synth, regardless of how cool you look.

| Even for $150 for the Yamaha, you'll still have like $250-350 left to look for a used sound module and still maintain the budget you apparently had when you were just thinking of getting the AX-7 on its own. Look for a used Novation A-Station, maybe (hell, there's a K-Station [the keyboard version] for $350 buy-it-now on eBay right now)... or any other true synthesizer module that might interest you.

| that'd be cool... i'll see if i win this... i hope there's like not another bidder to drive it up if i'm not outbid... and some of these in the past have gone for like 200... plus i need the speaker kinda for practice in my room and composing, sinc i dont have another keyboard... and if i win i'm gonna buy a synth module and run midi out on it to the synth.. then it should be alright shouldn't it?

| You can use any guitar amp. You may have to keep the gain low to prevent distortion. Quote: |

| Yeah, that's the gist of it. I don't know what programming is involved on the Yamaha, though.
You have a choice of two basic types of modules: sample-based with synth sounds, or true synths.
Personally, I like true synthesizers, but there are some GREAT sample-based modules with vintage synth sounds.
EMU has a line of modules with vintage sounds; Oberheim and Waldorf were old true synth module makers; etc.

| i just need something to ease me in for right now... i may decide i hate keytar.. and i'll run it through my old 15w crate practice amp.. it's cheap, but loud enough for home practice, and with my band i have PA support and the school pepband i have my choice of piano amp or pa... i'm not overly worried...

| Hey... we have rep back!
Sounds like it'll work for you. Here's something I just found.
The basic synth sound is nice.
The organs and keyboards are ok.

| On old FM synths like this SHS-10, look to your string and woodwind sounds to find more "true-synth-like" sounds. For example, the violin and cello from the SHS-10 appear to be pretty much straight sawtooth waves. Yum. Also, the clarinet on any old synth is generally a straight square wave, and this doesn't seem to disappoint. Cool. The flute should be close to a sine or triangle wave.

| sweetness... i see my goal is to take hardcore, add elements of prog/techno and run it through and arena rock filter, and take it closer to a sound that mainstream listeners can listen to without saying "that's too hard"... you know, make it wierd but listenable...

| Yeah... that'd work. I don't really like the controls on the MicroKorg, but it sounds nice. I much prefer a knob / slider for every last little thing, but the built-in vocoder+mic is hard to beat at that price.
