All of those critiques have as much to do with the writing and direction as they do with her performance. Of course, I didn't have a problem with Holmes either.

Whereas with Holmes, I saw much more passion for bringing people to justice, and more importantly, I felt a lot of chemistry between Holmes and Bale. I actually believed they were lifelong friends and that there was a possibility of something more there than just friendship. Maybe it was the fact that the character of Dawes in Batman Begins was written with Holmes in mind, but I thought she fit the role perfectly, whereas Gyllenhaal(although I believe her to be a good actress) didn't really make her own mark on the role.
I would have to agree with everything you said here.

I have to disagree with the majority here. When I saw Begins, I saw the character of Rachel being much more hardnosed/badass and was disappointed by a softer Holmes (I do enjoy Holmes in certain roles, but I just didn't see her as fitting the character). I felt Maggie did a much better job pulling it off.

Just my opinion.

Well, she's pretty hot. That's reason enough for me.

I liked Maggie better, but then again I dislike Katie Holmes in pretty much everything.

Personally, I find it to be quite an overrated film. I won't go into why as I've stated it plenty of times around here, but I personally believe Iron Man was a much better comic book hero movie.

How could u say the film was overrated? It was snubbed many nominations at the Academy Awards. Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart were the best actors in this film.

My first Dark Knight post.

Sure, "Iron Man" was the better comic book hero movie. "Dark Knight," on the other hand, was arguably the better film.

I won't disagree that Ledger and Eckhart gave excellent performances. I'd also add Gary Oldman to the list as well.

However, I don't think it deserved any more Oscar nominations than it got. I certainly don't think it was great enough for a Best Picture or a Best Director nom. If anything, The Wrestler deserved nominations in both categories moreso.

It tried to address more issues than your typical comic book movie, which was commendable. Unfortunately, I just don't feel that it explored the issues and ideals as extensively as it could have. That and I felt that a number of the performances weren't as good as they should've been. For instance, I felt Bale was much better in Batman Begins than he was in this one. In this one, it just felt to me like he was underplaying the role a bit too much. Also, as unpopular as my opinion about this is, I don't think Maggie Gyllenhaal was as good at playing the role of Rachel Dawes as Katie Holmes was . Don't interpret that as me saying Holmes is the better actress overall, because I don't think she is (I definitely feel Gyllenhaal is much better): I just feel like Katie had a better understanding of the character and portrayed the character's passion for the fulfillment of justice as well as the childhood-friendship chemistry with Bale than Gyllenhaal did. I didn't catch any chemistry between Bale and Gyllenhaal, and I personally didn't notice much chemistry at all between Gyllenhaal and Eckhart. That and, upon recent viewings, I've noticed a couple annoying plot holes as well.

+5000

The Dark Knight was acclaimed for the same reason people will notice weird stuff happening in 2012...people went into the movie with their assumptions already in place.

Dark Knight has an uninspired villain (if decently acted), a stiff lead actor, a poor replacement female lead (in a thankless role), several plot holes, a rushed & unconvincing close...and to boot it was a poor adaptation of the source material whose memetic coattails it clung to so fiercely.

Thank goodness Batman and the Joker will weather this storm. Nolan's Batman has barely made a scratch on the Batman of our collective consciousness, and Ledger's Joker is already losing steam.
