I was just trying to conform to his stated influences in another thread. My best old school punk tone comes from a valve jr to be honest. But I was reccomending for new school melodic before the pop-punk era.
indeed. you do have the extra help of actually knowing what kind of music Jeff plays. I haven't heard any of his stuff.

BSPE, you are correct. I love Rancid. I like the high gain though. The sound I'm looking for is similar to what you can hear below.

http://www.myspace.com/teenagebottlerocket (there's some language on some of the songs if anyone cares)

I've been talking to some people on another board about it and they all really speak highly of the JCM-800. In fact that is what I am tld was used to record the above link.

I just talked with some folks and one guitarist uses the 900 and the other has the 800.

Getting back to the original question...

I play through a Spider II 112 at church and use an FBV Express to control it.
While it's not the ultimate tone monster at all, it is a versatile and powerful amp than can be tuned and tweaked to do exactly what I need it to do in the setting that I'm using it.

Apparently Guitar Center is selling them for $200 right now. At least that's what I hear from people in SoCali.
If so, that is a deal and $100 off the street price.

Line 6

Someone just posted a Line 6 Flextone III 2x12 with floorboard on my local craigslist....I was just looking at Spider II's at sam ash yesterday so i'm hoping to get this. Oh yea, he posted it for only $300!! I really liked the spider but this would be so much better

I love my Flextone III. I got the Shortboard too. If you can afford it...get it. You can customize and store so many settings.

The Flex III is a lot more versatile than the Spider II, that's for sure, although the basic models are the same/similar.
I played a FlexIII at a local store on Saturday and was able to get some killer tones at low volume.

The key to getting the most out of any modeling amp, to me, is spending ample time with it in the environment you're going to use it in most and at the level at which you'll be playing it.
They do require a little dialing-in and tweaking but setting up your channels/patches ahead of time will pay off when you go to use it with your band or team. That way you'll maybe only need to make small adjustments in the context of the band rather than wasting time trying to generate patches while everyone else is waiting for you.

Also, I've heard rumors of the Spider III coming soon. Supposed to be killer.
