Urgent Fretwear Question

On a Fender American Telecaster ('03), is this bad fretwear? Or is it just the finish coming off? Is this normal?

The crowns of the frets are a bit worn, but I don't see anything "urgent" about the finish??

I've gone back and edited the picture so that it is circled.
I was just wondering if this guitar is going to need a fret-job soon, or if it's just the finish and the frets themselves are allright.

are these medium or medium jumbo frets?

honestly, they look fine to me. are they buzzing out or giving you intonation problems?

No problems like that, thing is I just bought this off a guy from eBay and he didn't mention the frets. I just wanted to know if I should be returning the guitar or not. No real buzzing out happening yet. Would a fret-job smooth them out? How much do you think that would run?

"Normal" fretwear would appear as depressions on the fret crowns. Those don't look to be anything like fretwear. I can't really tell from the pic if those areas appear to be breakdown or buildup.

Here's what I'll say. As long as the crowns are more or less intact, the issue on the fretsides really won't give you issues. However, the fact that metal is coming off on the sides of the fret might say something about the integrity of the crowns. It's not normal fretwear, it might not even mess with the guitar's playability. It's your call whether you should return the guitar, though.

It looks like someone refinished the fretboard and got some finish on the sides of the frets.

Based on what I've seen, including my mid 90's American Strat - on maple fretboards, Fender sprays the clear on AFTER the frets are installed, so its on the frets; the sides not the crown area. I guess they take the clear off the crown area. After time, that clear starts to flake off of the sides of the frets in places. What I see in your pics looks just my strat.

Oh yeah, the "clear" isn't so clear, at least not after the new wears off, its kinda yellow tinted.

I was thinking the same thing but I'm not sure about that.

It's weird but it looks like some form of corrosion.
Being that the frets are supposed to be stainless steel, this is beyond odd to me .

i've got that type of discoloration on most od my fretts, figured it had to do with my fingers wearing something off of the fretts, or crud from wear and tear building up were i don't touch often. looks really crappy, but that's all it seems to do.

I agree with Tom, my strat has the same thing. I'd say you're fine.
