| Hey look, it's Art! Following behind Rebekkah (Here-Am-I), I thought it would be beneficial to start a blog of my progress with my art in here, to get some critique and suggestions to improve my skills. Maybe my walk-throughs will also be helpful to those wondering how to do certain things.
At the moment, I am working on a commission from my school's principal. I am to draw his portrait. I have the first phase done- the pre-drawing:
When enlarging a drawing from a photo reference, grids are really handy things. You should only really block in the most simple shapes, but I tend to get carried away with form and shade. Once this drawing is done, I will trace it with baking paper, and transfer it lightly onto another page where I will finish it up.
At the moment, I am considering doing both coloured pencil and graphite versions of this portrait. Updates will come soon. |

| Traced:
The first few layers of colour:
Going over the colour with bolder and more vibrant strokes:
Defining shadows and giving depth:
The face and neck finished. The proportion in this image may be a little skewed due to the angle I took the photo at.

Next, the hair. Same principle as the skin: build up layers of colour from light to dark.
And this is how it's looking at the moment.
Excuse the flash.
For my next project, I am thinking of either finishing the 'Egg-Thing' comic strip I started AGES ago, or going out to op-shops and buying some nic nacs to arrange into a still life composition. |
