| Is this reading too heavy for our wedding? Hello folks,
My non-christian-future-family-in-law think that this reading is negative and should not be read at our wedding! They especially don't like V36. We like these verses and wanted it to represent what our lives will be like. It won't always been peachy keen, but God will always be with us, and we want to keep him centre!! Romans 8:35-39
35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36As it is written:
"For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered." 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God
that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What does everyone think?
We did talk about skipping V36, we don't really want to sensor it, but I guess that's what we might have to do!
They kept saying our wedding is supposed to be a celebration.
To us - knowledge of this is a celebration!!! God is awesome!
FYI - We are following this reading with: Psalm 145
A psalm of praise. Of David.
1 I will exalt you, my God the King;
I will praise your name for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will praise you
and extol your name for ever and ever.
3 Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
his greatness no one can fathom.
4 One generation will commend your works to another;
they will tell of your mighty acts.
5 They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
6 They will tell of the power of your awesome works,
and I will proclaim your great deeds.
7 They will celebrate your abundant goodness
and joyfully sing of your righteousness.
8 The LORD is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love.
9 The LORD is good to all;
he has compassion on all he has made.
10 All you have made will praise you, O LORD;
your saints will extol you.
11 They will tell of the glory of your kingdom
and speak of your might,
12 so that all men may know of your mighty acts
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures through all generations.
The LORD is faithful to all his promises
and loving toward all he has made.
Hit me with some opinions!

| It seems a touch heavy for a wedding to be me. I do have a very active imagination, and that passage brings a gruesome picture to my head. Not the sort of thin Id want to conjur up on my wedding day. I would start at 37 myself...
(read as purely subjective, unadulterated opinion, with no objective basis)

| I, for one, definitely think that the scripture should be read, none the less, it's very important for God to be at the start for all things in life. Whatever you choose, do read, I stand behind that 100%. |

| Opinions:
You should have someone sing Shane & Shane's setting of Psalm 145. It's brilliant.
Suggestions:
It's your wedding. Do whatever you like. It's not your inlaws' celebration, but yours.

| I agree with Nate on this one. It is your wedding, you choose what you want to do.
I think i remember from previous threads that you and your fiancee are paying for the wedding. Thats even more of a reason why you can do what you like. |

Hit me with some opinions! | I think it's awesome, Nomes. Do it. It's a great time for the unbelievers in your families and circles of friends who will be at the wedding to hear The Word.
Some friends of mine had the most beautiful wedding I've ever seen. And it included a corporate confession of sin, and a recitation of part of the Heidelberg Catechism, then a lot of Scripture and hymn-singing. It was fantastic. |

| I guess Im in the minority. Its not the scripture that bothers, just the sheep butchering reference. The mental picture is rather gruesome that comes to mind. It is your wedding. It is your decision, but I just want you to know some people may have imaginations like mine and might be picturing a sheep being butchered on your wedding day. Not the mental picture I would choose. However, I have a weak stomach, have butchered animals and have an overactive imagination. So take my thoughts with a grain of salt. I just thought I'd point that out again with more of the rationalle for consideration.

| I do agree with you, Bill, on the content of the Scripture being a bit odd / disturbing.
I was actually going to ask what it had to do with marriage at all. Heh. Go figure.

| We're just going to go for it.
The reason we want it, is to put the "vibe" across that in the good, the bad, and the ugly in our lives together, none of it can separate us from Him! Note: this includes the good! - "neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons..."
We didn't want a verse containing commands about marriage - that's what the vows are for (in my opinion, and there is room for something else in the ceremony because of this). We didn't want verses about love - as almost all verses in the bible are about loving one another = brotherly love! So it does apply to marriage, but not especially to marriage.
We wanted something affirming our intention to keep Christ centre and trust in Him.
These verses certainly don't apply especially to marriage either, but...meh - it's our wedding!
I am SO getting married in only two weeks!
