I haven't gotten a new CD in a long time, and I am thirsting for some surf music. What would be some good CDs to check out?

According to my cousin(who loves to surf), Jack Johnson for slow days and Van Halen(DLR era) for good days are his choices.

I'm assuming he's asking about the actual genre of "Surf-rock" however.

OK. Well, if that's true, then I'm not sure who to recommend.

Yeah Dick Dale is all I really know. There was another cool surf song on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack but I forget who it was by.

the theme to "Pulp Fiction" was "Miserlou" by Dick Dale...

there are a few surf tracks on that album, one by the Tornadoes called "Bustin' Surfboards", "Surf Rider" by The Lively Ones and "Bulwinkle Part II" by the Centurians

How this thread can go on so long without the mentioning of the Beach Boys is beyond me.

They are without a doubt the best example of surf music from the time when it was all about the surf, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a crazy fanboy.

Check out their Sufrin' Safari, Surfin' USA, and Surfer Girl albums. They cannot be matched.

while the Beach Boys were definitely all about surf culture, they're not really considered surf rock any more than Jack Johnson or Pennywise is today.

Why do you say that? What is considered surf rock if the biggest band of the first wave of it isn't?

This isn't to detract from the Beach Boys, who I consider to be one of the best pop-rock bands from that era, or any other era. I just have trouble reconciling the Beach Boys and their style to those of Dick Dale (the King of the Surf guitar and widely considered the founder of surf music) and other first wave bands such as the Ventures, the Chantays and the Surfaris.

I think where I draw the line is in the idea that initially surf rock was primarily instrumental in nature. By taking the focus away from guitar heavy riffs and moving it towards complex vocal melodies, the Beach Boys also, pioneered the second wave of surf rock, not the first. The vocal melodies and lyrics made the music much more popular from a national standpoint and allowed the Beach Boys' sound to be much more marketable than the instrumentalists that came before them.

Have you listened to any Beach Boys albums other than the singles? Half of them are instrumental, and they cover a number of Dick Dale songs on their first 3 albums.

To say they aren't surf is to say that the Beatles aren't British.
