So guys, I have this really old IBM T40 with XP. Pentium M processor 1300MHz, 800 MB RAM.

It runs really slow and I was wondering if I should install linux on it (maybe a very light version). Is it even worth it for such an old computer?

An idling install of Arch with XFCE desktop takes up 100mb RAM. 8 tabs in Chromium, 2 of which are Office online and 1 of MightyText, takes another 400mb.

I'd say it'll be fine :P

Alright. How do I do it? Where do I start? Are there some instructions I should follow?

Follow the beginners guide on wiki.archlinux.org

You should come hang out in IRC (sticky in CPF about it) and I can help you out as you go through it.

Lubuntu might be a worthwhile thing to look into. It's a light version of Ubuntu, which itself is lightweight.

I'm having trouble installing ffmpeg on Zorin (built on Ubuntu 12). Anyone have a tip or two?

I try running sudo apt-get install ffmpeg, but it says there are no packages available.

You don't have the ffmpeg repo in apt-get try this (which I googled to find, btw)

sudo apt-get install yasm
wget http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/releases/...-2.3.2.tar.bz2
tar -xjvf ffmpeg-2.3.2.tar.bz2
cd ffmpeg-2.3.2/
./configure
make
sudo make install
