Incedentally, I finally got my wireless working. Seems I was using a wrong or bad driver. As soon as I downloaded the right one and installed it, it started working fine. So I really was doing everything right to begin with... just wrong driver. Quote:

| Well, now I guess there isn't much. I was just showing you that since you didn't get it working. From reading that though, people have had better luck with it.
This post was brought to you by Ubuntu.
(Actually using ethernet at the moment though. Somethin has been going screwy with ym wireless, on windows. Which may explain why I can't get it to work on Ubuntu right now.)

| are you sure you're getting a clear signal? You might try it next to the wireless access point... and check if running dhclient to re-request an ip address (as su or root) does anything to help. |

| It's not Linux or my signal. I think it's my card. It just keeps dieing. Like, I have great signal and then poof, gone. This is on windows though, I haven't actually gotten it to do anything via Linux. I really haven't gotten anything to do anything on Linux.

Luckily I got it working, but if not, I would have tried that. So thanks. |

| Alright, I'm getting a new laptop of my own next year, and I might install Linux on it. I'm tempted to just use Vista, so someone convince me otherwise. Please?

So, it's my belief that tone is in the soap.
Thank you and goodnight. | |

Do you want something different/new/fresh/stable/customizable/interesting and you are willing to learn a new approach, go with Linux.
Do you want something familiar but with a new look and features? Go with Vista.
If you want to try both, you can always dual-boot, having both OSes installed and able to choose which one when you start up.
One thing to keep in mind if you start installing/reinstalling OSes, is that you should get an installation CD of Windows when you buy. Most manufacturers provide 'recovery partitions' and junk like that. Make sure you get a CD. That'll save you headaches later.

However, if I were to use Linux, which kind should I get that has the best software compatibility in mind?

When it all comes down to it, most distros are more similar than different. They all start with different defaults and presets, but similar end-results can be achieved with many.
I like Ubuntu, the best pros I like -- a great support community (Ubuntu forums, effectively bigger than CGR forums), some nice documentation/how-to's, a great package manager inherited from Debian to install native software (apt-get/synaptic), and several scripts to do some 'easy setup' stuff.

| Just ran the live CD in my little computer, an eMachine, 633mhz, 256mb, y'know, crappy set up but still useful. Bt it keeps on freezing, don't know why. The screen stays blank with a dash barely visible by the top left corner. I ran it on my main computer and it was fine, so I don't think it's the CD. Any suggestions/ideas? |

How far do you get in booting it?
Also, if you're looking to install it, you might try the 'alternate install' cd. If the liveCD doesn't work, this has a chance of installing a base system for you. Takes a little longer and doesn't look as pretty, but gets the job done.

I ran the live Cd and finally got to really try it. I loved it! I said before the interface was ugly- take it back! But I can't install it 'cause I still need Windows for a lot of stuff (Fruity Loops, Photoshop, Illustrator- but Fruity Loops mostly.) and most important: I have to livestream the football (soccer for you non-believers) matches. I do it with a couple of little softwares and I'm not sure if they'll work. i haven't tried it yet. But I'm sold on Ubuntu. I haven't tried dual boot 'cause I'm a n00b and I don't know how to do it. Any help would be appreciated. |

| I just installed Ubuntu. Is there a firewall by default or something? If not, where/how can I get it? |
