I'm positive there's an answer, but I'm certainly not the expert. www.ubuntuforums.org is probably a good place for us to find an answer. |

(thanks for being so patient with the Linux n00b.) |
I enjoy helping out. I remember what it was like trying to learn all this and would've very much enjoyed having some help, so here I am offering what help I can to newcomers.
Keep asking questions as you have them.

| Okay, so I am getting used to Ubuntu quite well. Some of the old linux stuff I had locked away is coming back to me.
What I am trying to remember is how to install an app. I downloaded a 200+ mb file (Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory) and the file ends with a .run extension, but I am not sure what I need to do with it now. Maybe I grabbed the wrong file...

| So I finally got ndiswrapper working. I just tried for a while and it worked.
Now everytime I activate my wireless it only stays activated for a little bit and then stops...I'll ask my friend Chris about it though. He'll prolly help me figure things out.

You could try this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...bcm43xx/Dapper , especially the part about upgrading to Dapper.
My problem now is that even though ndiswrapper tells me that the driver is present and the hardware is present, and I've loaded it into modprobe, and even blacklisted and unloaded the bcm43xx driver, my wireless card still isn't recognized and won't even show up in Networking. Ugh, I don't understand. |

| I don't really remember exactly what I did. I was just fiddling. Taking advice from several different sources, one being my friend Chris. Honestly, I probably just had some typo orginally. I had no problem once I blacklisted that driver and finally got my wireless driver installed. Thanks for the link though. I wish I could help you.

sh ./filename.run
(don't forget the dot-slash) |

./filename.run
Also, make sure it is executable (right click, under properties).

If ndiswrapper is installed, then what you also need is the driver for your wireless card. Once you have that on your hard drive, a good place to put it is on your desktop. Then type this in to Terminal:
sudo ndiswrapper -i ~/Desktop/(file name of .inf driver file)
To make sure it loaded the driver right, type:
sudo ndiswrapper -l
(That's a lower case L by the way). It should say "driver loaded, hardware present" or something like that. Then you need to load ndiswrapper in to modprobe. So type:
sudo ndiswrapper -m
Restart. Then go back to Terminal and type:
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
That should work. But I did the exact same and it doesn't seem to be working for me for some reason. Hopefully you'll have better luck. Let me know. | I followed those steps too, but still no luck. I think there may be something else happening though. I have two network connection icons up in the top right by the date. One of them is called Network Manager and the other is something else. Anyway, I wonder if there is a conflict with the two of them. I will see if I can play with it tonight. I hope that is what is happening.

| You should both take a look at this It's a way to install wireless without using Ndiswrapper. It's from the Ubuntu forums.
