| Hmm, I wish I'd seen this thread before you guys took your tests. I've taken AP exams in all of those tests you were worried about. Perhaps I could have given some hints. But it sounds like now you all are as experienced as I am now that you've taken them. |

| Wow you must've studied a ton...I got a 4 in U.S. History, a 3 in comp sci (thank God, I really don't understand the subject that well) and a 3 in English (disappointing, considering my SAT scores and all the essays I've written. I think I just took the essay and misinterpreted for whatever reason, realized my mistake afterwards...*shakes head*). |

| AP U.S. history was the hardest test I had. The AP class that I was enrolled in got dissolved early in the year because there were only 4 students there. The school had still ordered the AP tests so we still took them. I must say, I scraped out of there by the hair of my chiny chin chin. |

| For those who have taken the Spanish AP test, how did it go? As a high school Spanish teacher I am curious about your feelings regarding the test(we currently do not have AP Spanish). Was it worth the effort? Were you well prepared? Did you spend time studying outside of classroom assignments?
Thanks in advance |

| darfaz, I cannot speak for myself, as I have not taken a Spanish AP test or course... however, I do have a few friends who took the course and test this past school year. It was the first time that our school offered AP Spanish as a course, and there were a little less than 10 students in it, I think. My friends that took it had already taken four years of honors-level Spanish courses. They had thought they were well prepared for the test, but here's how one of my friends put it after he took the test: "I went into the test thinking I could get a 5. By the end of the first section or two, I was hoping for a 4. Towards the end, I felt that I would be happy with a 2 or 3." Apparently it's really hard. I understand it includes a section where you have to record yourself speaking in Spanish on a particular topic. Compared to the other AP tests that my school offers, it's also a very long AP test.
As far as the AP course went, I remember them saying that they did a lot more reading in that class than anything else (like speaking, perhaps). I'm not sure the teacher designed the class to evenly cover everything that would be on the test -- it seemed that she just wanted to offer a higher-level Spanish course.
I took a Calculus AP course, and the teacher had us use old AP tests all the time for classwork, homework, completion grades, etc. It got us used to the format, and we were able to learn what to expect. We did take one full-length practice test (which we had to break into two days and arrive early for) before the actual AP test, so we could get a feel for the timing test and how to pace ourselves. We all felt that the actual AP test was easier than the practice one that we took. In the past, all the students (10-15 per year) that have taken the Calculus AP exam have scored 5's (well, atleast since my teacher started teaching it... I don't know about years previous to that). I'm not sure about my classmates, but her teaching method worked for me. I got a 5 and am getting 8 hours of math credit for it. Yay!
But anyway, darfaz, if you're thinking about starting an AP Spanish course, I would definitely say that you should get copies of old Spanish AP exams and use those a lot in the class. |

| Thanks for the input.
I did take a look at some AP Spanish Guides at the bookstore. All I can say is wow. The tests are comparable to the Illinois state content test teachers must take to teach Spanish in the state.
If I am ever asked to teach an AP course, I will certainly just teach to the test. |

Thanks in advance | The AP Spanish test was extremely difficult. I did not pass it. Fortunately since then I have been on missions to Spanish speaking countries and have a few more years of spanish under my belt, but at that time I was at the top of my spanish class and our teacher was shocked half of the class didn't pass. As it turns out, the success rate for the foreign languages is severely down.
It's kinda stupid, the test is supposed to qualify you for a college credit of Spanish class and yet it's harder than anything you face in college. |

Thanks in advance | I got a 3. Most everyone who took it at my school passed. That's because it's a pretty self selective group. I'm in the IB program, so everyone has to take 4 years of spanish anyway... just the 4th year you can opt to take the AP test (even though you are enrolled in IB spanish IV like everyone else).
My teacher is somewhat of a Spanish superstar teacher... been teaching for around 30 years. Been to mulitple AP conferences, been a grader, knows ap test writers. She just has teaching the test down. We don't even spend that much time on the AP specific things (we have an easier IB test, that is more essential to our graduation).
I know I botched a lot of the oral parts, because I was just having an off day. Usually I'm a fantastic oral BSer. I made up for it on the essay and aural part though.
No, I spent no time outside of class studying (unless you want to count the 20 minutes on the night before the AP test cramming). |
