i'm one of those people who won't pay too much for a pet (well, dog or cat size), i'll definately be over to a shelter when i get i cat for myself.

Last year I got a chameleon and I already love him to bits. Previously, I wouldn't have been prepared to pay much for a pet as I think you can get many adorable animals for low prices but most species of Chameleons are either very rare or non-existent in captivity. I would never buy a wild caught chameleon as I think there are too many ill consequences of that trade. One guy I know who helps run a local exotic pet shop even went as far to say the wild caught trade should be banned completely and I can see there is a strong case for that as a very small proportion of animals (at least when referring to chameleons, who are easily stressed and have specific care requirements) make it to a new home alive. He even said that he saw a box full of chameleons, with separate compartments with every one of them dead in an airport

I'd vote 300-500 as a maximum but it would have to be something fairly specialist that I really wanted and probably would never pay that. I might pay 150-300 for a Panther Chameleon but more likely to pay more if I was planning on breeding them and if there were very strong genetics etc.

This, of course doesn't account for the other costs involved in keeping a pet.

The last option is probably the most true of my views.
