Bad Law

My roommate owns a dog.
My roommate took her dog out to go to the bathroom.
My roommate allowed her dog to stray onto someone elses yard.

I got a ticket.

I wen to you court to fight it.
The neighbor said that she brought out the dog.
The neighbor said that I was nowhere around.
The neighbor said that he had never seen me interact with the dog.

I lost.

Apparently, I'm the owner because I've ever been one of several people to harbor the dog. Mind you, the actual owner also harbors the dog (she lives in the same place) and was actually the person who did everything in question. The law doesn't seem to care. The reason I got fined instead of her? I answered the door first.

Wow. That's pretty dreadful. How much was the fine?

I guess the moral is if you have a roommate who is a dog owner, carefully watch and govern what he/she does with his/her dog.

Or, always make the roommate answer the door.

This sort of reminds me of that scene in Clerks where Randall sells a pack of cigarettes to a 9-year-old, and Dante gets fined for it because it happened when he was supposed to be working.

Yeah... this sounds less like justice and more like capitalism.

Maybe we shouldn't call it "bad law" and just call it "good business"?

And you can't even say it's all "court costs". Two are listed as court costs, but for any ticket from them the base fine doubles if you fight it.

No kidding. This seems to violate the right to redress of grievence. I've written the ACLU but I'm not optimisitc they will take the case. We'll see if I even get a response.

Sell the dog for $277.

1. You just made up for the fine
2. You dont have to worry about the dog doing it again

Im just kidding. I love dogs. Thats pretty messed up.

That's probably the best idea I've personally seen so far... too bad it isn't your dog Jerry. And make it at least $300. Make some sort of good out of the situation.

Logistics always get in the way, anyways, new plan.

1. Kidnap the dog (since its your room mates dog, it shouldnt be too hard)
2. Ransom the dog for $277 ($300 if you want to follow jfahler03's advice)

What results from this?
1. Your roommate will know his/her place in the household.
2. You got back your fine plus earned a little extra if you took the $300 route.
3. You feel like 300 bucks because you just pulled off a successful ransom. (Congratulations by the way )

P.S. Chloroform works well in kidnapping small animals.

It's all because government is a business in itself. The main difference is that governmental politics are reported more.
