American church history - 1790 - 1840ish

I am starting my honors senior thesis here at KSU and am researching local church histories during the Second Great Awakening - due to the fact that I live about 9 miles south of Oberlin College where none other than Charles Finney (by many considered to be the first great evangelist) became president in 1835. I plan on looking into local history and want to see to what extent the Second Great Awakening actually had on the religious landscape of the surrounding communities...

...anyone interested in this time period? It's VITAL for anyone who wants to know about modern Protestantism to understand...

...heck we probably wouldn't be on a "Christian" gutiar web page forum if this never happened...

I took a class on the history of religion in America, and we focused a good deal of the class on this time period. I enjoyed it tremendously.

Wow... I actually had forgotten about this post. Did it seem interesting to you how reliant we are upon this period of history in developing an "American" Christianity?

I would assume that it wasn't until this time that the citizens of the country developed a truly American identity...hence why their Christianity didn't really have an "American" flavor to it. Sects need to know who they are and from what social context they come.
