Have you tried one out? I personally like the Precision/Jazz style body better than the SG style, but everone like something different. Go to your local music store, and try it out, so see how it hangs on you body. Thump on it, to see if you like the tone/sound of it. Then think about buying! Best of luck to you!

You can find a nice Peavey bass from Ebay for like 120 or less. You can get like a Fender Rumble amp for like 100 bucks. Those packages aren't really the best you can get for the price.

OK, I'll tell you straight up, don't get that bass. There are a lot of issues with it. First off, it's a short scale, which most people don't like. Also, it only has one pickup, and that pickup is right up against the neck. That bass will have a really deep, undefined sound that isn't going to work well in most situations.

I'd recommend looking at www.rondomusic.net and seeing what looks good on there. There are plenty of better basses that will serve you well on there. As for an amp, I would say drop a bit more change and get something halfway decent. I'm constantly amazed by the Roland Cube Bass amps. Even the 30 watt version sounds awesome, and the 100 watt is just killer.

Try a bunch of Yamahas out, you'll be happy that you did (just my opinion).

I just typed "good beginner basses" into google, and this is what I came up with:
http://guitar.about.com/library/weekly/aatp031402.htm

I suggest that you look on harmony central for reviews about the basses before going purely on these suggestions.

but also bring anything you read on H-C back here...or learn how to read the ratings. people who like their instruments tend to give them all 10s and people who don't like them give all 1s. look for the ones that give good reasons and realistic scores...these are the valuable reviews.
