Being Drunk

Is it sinful to be drunk?

i know it might sound like a stupid question but it's always sort of bugged me.

i know verses in the bible that say it is wrong to be a drunk, but I can't seem to remember any that say it is wrong to just get drunk once.

if it is then how many drinks can you have until it is a sin?

Ephesians 5:18
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

As long its not from wine, I think you're ok. But getting drunk on wine is wrong (and in addition to debauchery leads to a nasty nasty hangover...)

Wise guy...

As wine was all they HAD in the Biblical world (the Germans had beer) I believe the passage applies to general drunkeness.

But is that really a command, or advice? I mean, obviously debauchery is sin, but it seems that the basis of not getting drunk is what it leads to, not the fact of it's being. Like other parts of the bible say to stay out of the path of the temptress, but if at some point you happen to be some place where a lady is coming on to you does it mean you were sinning even if you don't commit adultery? In one sense it could be seen as a command that is law in itself, but in another it could be seen as some common-sense instructions on how to avoid breaking a command that is law. Not that I'm looking for an excuse to get drunk, I've actually never been drunk, but I think sometimes the bible might just be giving us wisdom for a righteous and fruitful life and we make it a law.

Luke 21:34

34"Watch out! Don't let me find you living in careless ease and drunkenness,

Romans 13:13
Don't participate in wild parties and getting drunk,

Sounds like a clear command to me.

Jesus said that drinking was okay, as long as you don't allow yourself to become drunk.

And the more drunk you are, the harder it is to make decisions. So I would strongly recommend not getting drunk. You can make choices that could destroy the rest of your life in one night.

Agreed.

Also, if the bible strongly advices something multiple times, I think we should follow it as if it were a command.

Legally you are too drunk to drive after 1-3 drinks.

Each state has a legal alcohol-in-blood percentage...here it's like .8% which is less then a beer.

In, I think Matthew or Luke, I believe the Pharisees condemned Jesus for eating and drinking, and called him a glutton and a drunkard, but he rebukes them and says that you can drink as long as you get drunk, and eat only until you are satisfied. If anyone knows where this is, please help me out

In Ephesians 5:18,

Jesus did drink, but did not get drunk.

That is false. All states have passed laws making the legal BAC at below .08%. However, you can have more than a beer and have a lower BAC. A 160 lb. male can drink four 12 oz. beers in an hour and still only have a .07% BAC level. See here.

I was gonna say... because 1 would mean your blood consists entirely of alchohol, right? So .8 would mean that 4 out of 5 of your blood cells would be alchohol?

Galations 5:19-21.

"When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, your lives will produce these evil results: sexual immorality, impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, idolatry, participation in demonic activities, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outburst of anger, selfish ambition, divisions, the felling that everyone is wrong except those in your own little group, envy, DRUNKENESS .....Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

I think thats pretty clear.

I think the point of the passages is to avoid alchoholism. We see the idea of being mastered by or enslaved by sin throughout the Bible. I think you'd have a hard time proving that getting drunk once in a while is sinful. After all, when Christ turned the water into wine, he did it because they had run out. The people at the wedding celebration were already drunk and God gave them more. So I think that the passages on drunkeness are more of a lifestyle thing. If you're a drunk, you're in sin. If you have too much to drink one night, just don't drive home.
