HELP!!!BASS CHRASH COURSE NEEDED!

Hey! I am a newbie at bass, who learnt the bass through one of the lessons just 10 mins ago. I really need HELP!

1)Will i improve if I just keep practicing the same song? What if I am using an invisible bass?
2)I can’t find the bass chords for the song “Lord Reign in Me” so can someone help me convert the guitar chords to bass chords please? (please include the lyrics cause I get lost easily. Thanks)
Here:
G D C D G
Over all the earth You reign on high
D C D Em
Every mountain stream, every sunset sky
D C D Am
But my one request, Lord my only aim
C D G
Is that You reign in me again

Chorus:
G D C D G
Lord reign in me, reign in Your power
D C D Em
Over all my dreams, in my darkest hour
D C D Am
You are the Lord of all I am
C D G (Am)
So won't You reign in me again

3)How do you convert “CDEFGABC” to bass chords?

4)How do you strum? Do you just use your fingertips or a pick?

5)How do you change frets as quickly as possible? For e.g., 9 to 7 to 3.

6)How do you position your left hand? If it is a fast song can I just position it as a chord?

7)Do bass chords have keys? if they do, how do i change keys to match the rest of the band?

8)I am looking for bass chords for this band, Christian City Church Youth, for the album “No Longer I”. Looking for the songs “change”, “yesterday is gone”

Thanks! and God bless!
-kai

Hey Kai, I'll try to tackle a few of your questions...

1. Everone one learns different, but I think if you practice one song over and over, you'll get better at that one song, but not necessarily better as a musician. Go get a beginning bass book, learn your scales and continue to practice.

2. Unless the guitar tabs you listed have been capo'ed, you can play the same notes, to start with. Then when you've learned then, fill in with runs and riffs to make it your own.

3. The chords will be the same. You are typically just an octave lower than the guitar. Sometimes you will play a slightly different note, but it will still be in the same key as the guitar root note.

4. I pluck with my finger. A lot of people like to use a pick, but I think that what ever floats your boat works best. You can change your sound for different songs by plucking, slapping or picking.

5. Find a different chord shape to play the same note on a different fret. That will allow you to get around the frets faster in many instances. To differentiate between chord shapes, get a bass book. Its based on the guitars chord shapes of E A C G and D.

6. Again, here is where a lesson or a book comes in handy(no pun intended).

7. Yes, the bass has a key, which is the same as the rest of the band(except for the drummer...he is in his own key)

8. Cant help you with this one.

Basically you just play that single note on the fret board.
When it says Eb you can play(1D 6A 11E)<==All the same note. IF the song is capoed then you still play Eb relative to the capo position [Ex) Eb capo 1 = E]

Don't learn chords. I've been playing for four years and don't use chords. Just hit the single base note of the chord. If it says G, play 4th string (the lowest one) 3rd fret. That's all yout have to do.

If you dont learn the chords, you are limiting yourself. Playing D F A and C of a Dm7 sounds better than just hanging on D for a measure. That is, unless the song calls for simplicity. IMHO

Yeah arpeggios do spice things up but for a new player the root of the chord is often enough.

hey thanks for the replies but i still don't get it
according to one of the bass tutorials,

The G string from the 0 fret to the 24th fret is as follows.
G-G#-A-A#-B-C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F#-G-G#-A-A#-B-C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F#
Here's the D string from the 0 fret to the 24th fret.
D-D#-E-F-F#-G-G#-A-A#-B-C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F#-G-G#-A-A#-B-C-C#
This is the A string from the 0 fret to the 24th fret.
A-A#-B-C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F#-G-G#-A-A#-B-C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F#-G-G#
Last is the E string from the 0 fret to the 24th fret.
E-F-F#-G-G#-A-A#-B-C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F#-G-G#-A-A#-B-C-C#-D-D#-

so does that mean that for the song "Reign in Me", i play
G-000----666------------|
D-----000----------------|
A------------------------|
E------------------------|

thanks

For the most part I say don't play chords on your bass. Especially if you are new to it, which you said you are.

Micah's way is the best because you can control the note instead of playing it on an open string. You might get the hang of this yet.

Without hearing or seeing you play I don't know what to tell you about the rubber bandish sound...it would be in the way you are playing it but I can't describe in words what you should do. Sorry.
Also, I don't know this song so I can't tell you about how to play it, but just do what sounds good to you.

When you are want to stop the open note press your left hand down on it (not to the fretboard tho) and it will stop vibrating.
