| Pickles and Cheese: the Final Frontier. Hello all, my name is Dan, and I am an 18-year-old Hoosier. I was born on July 27 in the Year of Our Lord 1987, in Evansville, IN. I am the firstborn son of two Christian parents who have brought me up in the way I should go. I'll start out my journal here by imparting unto you my life's story
I spent the first six years of my life in southern Indiana, near and later in the town of Washington, Daviess County. I started out as a Pentecostal, as my parents were not allowed to take communion in any of the Mennonite churches where we lived. It's a long story (that I'm not going to tell right now) and is the reason I despise legalism. My dad was raised Mennonite, and I would say that's why we're Mennonite now. After I 'graduated' Kindergarten, we moved up to northern Indiana due to a few circumstances. Dad needed more work, and our church broke up for reasons I won't go into.
We first lived in rural Kokomo, but we only lived there about seven months. In this time, we found a Mennonite church nearby that my dad's cousin went to. My parents were allowed to become members and take communion at this church, and that was a main factor that caused us to stay at that church even when we moved a half hour away. I'm sure a lot of you know tht00, he is one of my best friends and it is at that church that we met and our friendship fostered. Heck, he's the one that got me started posting here on CGR.
Anyways, after the short time we lived near Kokomo, we moved a bit further north to get closer to the school I attended, a Christian school in a town near Fort Wayne. We continued to go to the Mennonite church. We lived in this place, rural Peru, for about 4 years. During this period of time, I came to Christ when I was 8 years old. My younger brother also came to Christ and we were both baptized the following summer, when I was 9 and he was 7.
We moved again when I was about 11, to a place about 7 miles from where we had previously lived. This was much closer to where I went to school. But after two years, my parents decided to take me out of the Christian school due to the cost, and because I was getting nearer the age of driving and they were always at differences with the administration of the school who maintained their right to search students' cars whenever they wanted to.
So when I was in eighth grade, I was put into public school. This was probably the hardest time of my life, as I was constantly teased by my fellow classmates for trivial reasons. I was pretty sad for a long time (vast understatement), but the Lord helped me pull through it. The teasing and such quit as soon as I got into 9th grade, praise the Lord.
The biggest passion I have is to sing. I joined my high school's choir when I was in 9th grade. Originally it was just for the credit, but I soon discovered that I could sing well, and that I actually enjoyed it. To this day, I am still in choir.
High school passed quickly, and I graduated on May 27, 2005 from Southwood High School. Earlier in the school year, a great opportunity came our way. My grandmother's house was going up for sale and was being offered along with the property of 15 acres for a low price if a member of the family bought it. Mom and Dad jumped on the opportunity to finally own a home again, and on July 30 (three days after I turned 18) we officially moved into our new home. You might be asking yourself, "So where is it, huh?" The answer to your question is: perhaps a mile from the very first place I lived. I have found myself back in Daviess County. My family now attends one of the same Mennonite churches that had a problem with them taking communion. I'm still not entirely sure whether there will be a problem with that, I certainly hope not. The pastor is an old friend of ours (incidentally, he used to go to the church we attended in northern Indiana). The Lord works in mysterious ways.
So, now I'm a freshman at the University of Southern Indiana. I am involved in USI's Chamber Choir, which I must say is one of the best experiences of my life. We sing a lot of Christian songs (it's sad, though, that many of the members of the choir are not Christian). I am involved in our school's Campus Outreach, a nondenominational Christian evangelizing and fellowship organization.
So, that gives you quite an insight on my life. If you've made it all the way through, please feel free to give yourself a pat on the back. May the Lord bless you as you go throughout your day!

| Yeah that really was a book lol.
So far things are going pretty well at church. My brother is really involved in the youth group and my parents seem to be enjoying it. I don't go often as I am a college student and I only go home every couple months or so. When I do go, I enjoy it. Our pastor is excellent and I am in the "young adult" Sunday School class, which is full of really fun people.
If they have had communion at church, I haven't been there for it. Either that or they haven't had it since we've been there, and that would be kind of odd for a Mennonite church, since communion is twice yearly (in spring and in fall). I sincerely hope my parents and brother were able to share in that. There was a vote one Sunday that I was there over a choice for 'overseer.' Our pastor right now is an interim, and we are in the process of getting a permanent pastor. As such, an overseer was chosen to help in the process. Now what is really coincidental is that the person chosen as overseer is the pastor of my old church up in Kokomo! Him and his wife were down one Sunday I was home and it was good seeing them again.
Back to the vote, though. My dad did not participate in the vote (Mom wasn't there). I don't know if that means that he can't be a member of the church, or if my parents just haven't formally transferred membership.
Anyway, I am now on SPRING BREAK! I got out of my Political Science class about a half hour ago, and so I AM DONE until March 13th!
Praise God from Whom all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Amen.
I'm going to try to attach a song sung by our Chamber Choir. If it works, it'll be "Poor Man Laz'rus" by Jester Hairston. It's a song about Jesus' parable of Lazarus, the poor leper who was denied aid by a rich man. They both died that night, and Lazarus went to Heaven while the rich man (in the song, his name is Divies) went to Hell. Divies could see across the gulf to Heaven and asked for Lazarus to come put a drop of water on his tongue because he was in torment. Sorry for the echo, we were performing in a very large Catholic church. I hope you enjoy it! God bless!

| Cool blog/journal
Your choir songs I've heard so far sound really good. If I had to critique it, the only thing I could come up with is that the basses are a bit overpowered. That's a common problem though, as choirs have mostly girls, and tenors are in a range in which they can push a bit and be as loud as they need to be. Excellent job.
What vocal part do you sing in choir?
What's your favorite movie?
What are some of your interests other than singing?
Do you play any other instruments?
I think it's good when guys sing, because most are too insecure to. How long have you been singing?
It's been nice meeting you, Sage. I'll look forward to posting here in the future |

Yes, our bass section is rather powerful. We had 8 (out of 35 choir members) last semester and this semester it's like 10 out of 27 so we've gained a bit more influence, if you will. Most of the basses are loud, one of them (not me) is actually proud of that. Quote: |
Originally Posted by fallinguprawks What vocal part do you sing in choir? | Like that paragraph said, I am a bass, currently second (low) bass but I have been known to sing baritone and even second tenor when need arises. Quote: |

Originally Posted by fallinguprawks What are some of your interests other than singing? | Oh man, I've got a lot of interests. I'd say number one besides singing would be reading, be it the Bible, fantasy, scifi, whatever, I'll read anything. Also high on the list are those Chuck Norris jokes. My friends and I have been into those for a really long time now, we university kids get obsessed with things easily. The craze is starting to die down here though. I used to be really big into theater and such, but now I have no time to pursue that. I also am a language fanatic. I love to read about/research/learn languages. I took three years of French in high school, and added German to the list when I came to college. German is going well for me so far, I hope it continues to. I don't know what God is planning for me with His imparting unto me the love of languages, but I hope I can figure out what it is, in His time. Quote: |

After that, I got really disinterested, stopped practicing, and Mom and Dad sold our piano. Now I can play "Old McDonald" but that's about it. Lately I've been wanting to learn how to play the guitar, but before I started getting interested, my younger brother stopped playing and my parents gave his guitar to a friend. So yeah, other than my vocal chords, no instruments anymore. Quote: |

Singing is, in my opinion, one of the best means we have to worship our Lord. I've been involved in choir for five years now, but I guess you could say I've been singing my entire life, although I used to not like to do so. Quote: |

| Hi Dan, welcome to CGR. All I can tell you is to have fun, don't take things too personal in CPF, and avoid that Tony (Ring of a bell) fellow at all costs.
That is all.
Later,

Ok, I recant. Tony is the coolest. Actually he is one of my favorite brothers and we are going to go on missions and snowboarding together one day, when he grows up. For serious.

| Hello everyone, nice to meet those of you I didn't previously know. Thanks also to those who enjoyed the attachment!
Oh and just a heads-up, you all can call me Dan if you want, it's all the same to me. I'm not real big on screen names.
So let me tell you a bit about my weekend. Four of my friends and I went to the "Garden of the Gods" recreational area in southern Illinois on Saturday. That place was AWESOME! We climbed rocks, hiked on trails, and enjoyed each other's fellowship. I think that God has recently implanted in me a love of the outdoors; not too long ago I'd be the kid that sat inside all the time and played video games and never went outside. Nowadays I don't play video games much at all and I don't watch TV anymore besides movies and a little while I'm at home, and I am outside a lot.. for example some of you might have seen a picture I posted in CPF of me and my friends hiking... I love doing stuff like that now.
But there is one particular thing I'd like to get across about our trip..... we had quite a scare at one point, one of my friends almost died. Two of my friends, Ross and Brad, climbed down into a wide spot between rocks. And they couldn't get back up. Another of my friends, Brandon, and I decided to try to pull Ross up out of there. We each grabbed one of his hands, but due to perspiration, Ross slipped and he fell. He slid down a lot and to tell you the truth, I thought he was going to fall all the way down to the floor of the valley we were in. Quite a ways. Praise God, he managed to stop himself on something. At that point, he was having trouble getting back to a place where we could have tried again to get him up. With a lot of effort on Brad's part and a lot of grace on God's part, Brad was able to pull Ross back to where they started. Then, Brad was able to somehow stretch his legs to cover the distance between the rocks that they were in, and get back up to where we were. With him and Brandon holding my legs and my other friend Nick's legs, Nick and I were able to grab onto Ross' wrists. We almost dropped Ross again, Nick's hands slipped off I think (the details are a little muddy, it all happened pretty fast), I was straining to keep hold of Ross and I actually screamed with the effort (it was all God's intervention or else it couldn't have been done), Nick was able to get Ross' wrist again and we got him up. After that was all done, we collapsed, thanking God for His grace and providence.
So that was frightening.
This morning, Jonah (brother) and I went to Sunday School and ate at Wendy's, then went to our cousin's later this afternoon. I watched them play pingpong for a long time. They have a sort of ritual where they play a maximum of seven games, whoever wins 4 first, wins "the title." Then I played Jonah in pingpong and I got skunked. My cousin is obsessed with professional wrestling so we also watched a lot of that and played some wrestling video games. Another thing he is obsessed with is Amish people, although he isn't Mennonite or even Anabaptist like me, he is descended from that tradition. So we make Amish characters on his wrestling game. His character's name is "Amos Homer", mine is "Jebediah Yoder", and Jonah's is "Der Parson." Fun times.
On our way to my cousin's, we saw an Amish buggy... on the highway. Dad called us while we were on the road and that's when we passed it, and Jonah said "Hey Dad, there's a buggy on the highway!" And Dad said "Huh, what's that supposed to mean?" "Um, there is an Amish buggy, pulled by horses, and it's on the highway." Jonah and I decided later that Dad probably thought we were using some sort of jargon or slang. So we came up with a meaning.
"Let's drive a buggy down the highway." = "Let's get high." [/sarcasm]
Alright, that about covers it. You all have a fine Monday.

| I noticed that I haven't done this yet. I'm going to tell you all a bit more about myself, some random facts, if you will. All the preceding information has been a bit vague and inconcrete.
Name: Dan
Age: 18. I'll be 19 in July.
Marital status: Single
Height: 6'1"
Body type: average
Hair: Dark brown
Eyes: Dark brown
Skin: Tanned most of the year round.
Tanning beds?: Never.
Smoke?: No.
Drink?: No.
Languages I speak: French, German, and a smattering of Pennsylvania Dutch
Religion: I've been a Christian for almost 11 years now.
Denomination: Mennonite
What I believe: That baptism is only for those that have accepted Christ as their savior. Baptism is not a method of salvation: it is an outward sign of inward change and a public confession of faith in Christ. I am also a pacifist.
Favorite Music: I'm a big fan of John Schmid (Christian folk artist who performs some music in Pennsylvania Dutch); other Christian artists such as Chris Tomlin, Michael W. Smith, Stephen Curtis Chapman, and many others; Manau (French Celtic rap group, the only rap I will listen to); Johnny Lang; Wesley Willis, and many others. I will basically listen to anything, I'm not really picky, other than heavy metal and 'gangsta' rap.
Favorite food: Pizza! Also tacos, bratwurst und kartoffeln, crepes, other good things. I'm a pretty internationally-flavored person.
Where I've lived: I've never moved outside of Indiana.
And people always ask this: What I look for in women: First off, if a woman is not a Christian, then I have no desire to pursue a relationship. That is the only important thing I look for, but some things that are important to me include the ability to carry on an intelligent conversation, a good sense of humor, just an all-around good personality. Some guys say that looks are the only important thing: that sickens me. The most physically attractive woman can also be the ugliest if she hasn't got a good personality. Modest is hottest!
And I do believe that's about enough.
I'm considering growing a chin beard again. I did once before, then I messed up shaping it and I shaved it off. Comments/approval/disapproval requested. I'll abide by the general majority. Thanks!
