It's what you do with a drunken sailor. When a person consumes a lot of alcohol, they actually become dehydrated - and alcoholics are often anemic as well. When an intoxicated person is brought into the ER, they get an IV solution that has lots of vitamins in it - which turns the solution yellow. It is known as a "banana bag".

You had me excited until the last sentence, because I was thinking, "Dude, they give them banana smoothies intravenously?!"

And almost twice my size as well. I was barely big enough that they let me go home rather than in the incubator. 5lb, 11oz.

Ahahaha. My mom developed a habit of coming to my room looking for gum, when I was an avid chewer in high school. And then I got some free tins of Altoids fruit candy when I started college, and she started bumming those off of me, too. It's a parent's priviledge to hork such things off one's children.

It's also a roommate's priviledge to share foodstuffs back and forth. But that's a bit different.

Banana bags: I would guess they not only have a different color, but a funky smell to them, as well. The IV fluids I was on in the hospital post-op caused... other things... of mine.... to reek horridly. Fun times. [/tmi]

That's why Red Bull is yellowish!

Now I know.

Red Bull: Never had one.

Drunken sailor: Take away his booze and then rehydrate him.

Banana bag: Sounds yucky.

Candy stealing: I am pro-candy stealing. All the way.

Toe: It got stomped at youth group tonight. It made me cry and my gauze got all soaked with blood. I felt worse for the boy that did it. He felt so horrible and I was trying to suck it up so I could take care of him. I was doing the hysterical laugh/cry thing. I was ridiculous. Yes. That was me. Ridiculous Bloody Gauze Lady.

Doctor: I don't need no stinking doctor. Actually, I am going to call tomorrow if it gets any redder. Right now, I am going to soak it for a bit. It was a bloody mess when I took the gauze off.

Goodnight, Homefries. *waves buh-bye*

Imagining that happening almost made me woozy... crazy stuff.

I can't decide if energy drinks are evil. I really don't like it when Mara drinks them, but I don't know that I have a legitimate reason.

Hm. That could be. My current homeschool mom gig doesn't expose me to a lot of drunken sailors.

I was slightly woozy for the rest of the evening.

I assessed the damage from The Stomp. It squooshed out a bunch of blood from the opening I had made with the needle the night before. It also must have torn the nail away a bit from the sides because stuff is seeping out from under the edges now and it wasn't like that before. The whole nail is pulled out a little more than 1/8", but it's still attached at the bottom and there is still all the skin at the top holding it on.

The short soak was good for it, but I'm not sure how often I should do that. It was starting to look a little pink on the side where the bucket tore the skin, but it's now normal looking. It felt much better afterwards. I woke up with it all gross again. June, would you keep it covered all the time for now?

I absolutely LOVE Bit-O-Honey. Do they not have it in NZ at all, Kepa? This should be fixed.

Iowa probably has the fewest drunken sailors per capita of all the states.

I would recommend soaking that puppy in Betadine solution a couple times a day and keeping it covered all the time for about a week. Foot injuries get infected so easily.

Aside from trying to keep you toe from throbbing, what do you plan to do today, Carol?

Energy drinks ARE evil. Heaps of sugar, heaps of caffine. They even have recommended 'dosages' of them. For example, you aren't supposed to drink more than 2 cans of V a day. But, they're great if you're driving long distance.

You know, it would be REALLY interesting if it did "Ok, so, we're going to go through this today, but first we... oh wait, hold on, there's ANOTHER drunken sailor. Sheesh. Where's the long boat?"

Oh man... you HAVE to take that to a doctor or something. Oh man.

Nope, no Bit-O-Honey anywhere in New Zealand that I know of. But then again, there may be speciality stores around the place. Like this Japanese/Korean speciality store I used to go into when I had the chance. That was a fun store.

One more thing to add to the Iowa Tourism list. Unless people really enjoy drunken sailors. Depends on the demographic, I suppose.

I may not go to the doctor, but I am dutiful. I will buy a gallon of Betadine solution today so that I can do this. And I will need more gauze.

Well, I was hoping the only thing I HAD to do today was take care of my toe, but there are these kids here...

I am going to teach The Youngers how to make homemade egg noodles. We have a lovely roast in the fridge that needs to become a lovely Midwestern meal.

I am going to finish a chore chart for the boys.

We are going to read. And do spelling, math, history, Bible and grammar.

I have to pick up the grammar curriculum first. *smile*

I am ordering our Spanish curriculum.

Prepare for a meeting tonight.

Laundry.

Balance the checkbook and pay bills.

That looks like the bulk of it. There are about a thousand other things, but that looks good for now.

Mara drinks them occasionally. She hasn't had one in a long, long time. That is good.

Hahahaha...that WOULD be interesting. Then when Mr. D gets home I can say, "Honey, you need to empty the long boat again!"

It sounds horrible, but we're doing okay for now. I am ready to call if needed. At this point, they most likely aren't going to do anything in addition to what I'm already doing. Dr. Madison is pretty conservative. She likes things to be allowed to heal on their own. I do know doctors that would say to just take the toenail now. I can see both sides. I will call Julie The Nurse and follow her recommendation.

I love specialty grocers. There is a very large one in Des Moines that apparently has an amazing array of homemade enchiladas and carne asada. The newspaper review said it was excellent food and very inexpensive. Sally and I need to lunch there.

An adorable little Bosnian bakery opened in our neighborhood years ago. Everything was wonderful, but they didn't see the need to eliminate the fruit flies in their bakery cases. Once you see fruit flies flying around it becomes rather unappetizing. It stayed open for less than a year.

Time to gather the troops. Have a great day, everyone!

Someone has been eating at my computer. There is a lentil sitting next to my monitor. [/wrath]

IN THE 1500'S...
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination
would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and se if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a "wake."

That's pretty creepy, Mrs. N.

I would drink myself unconscious just to be able to wake up and shout, "No, look out, there's a hairy beast behind you, yeah!" like Austin Powers and scare them all.

Sorry, didn't mean to be creepy... I just thought it was interesting! (sort of)

Mrs. D - Hope your foot is better! (I wonder what they did with cat-litter toe injuries in the 1500's?)
