Seriously, I think it's cool for everyone to list their influences and the players that they like. It can make for fun, healthy and educational dialog.
But once the word "best" enters the convo then it's usually downhill from there.

I mean that people pick their guitar heroes and defend them with all of their might. Alot of people have no basis on whether or not a guitarist is better than another, aside from "oh i really like him"

ok, I guess I can see things getting out of hand in the way you mentioned... I guess I just wasn't looking at this thread that way. I was just looking at it as a fun 'getting-to-know-each-other' kind of way
