you're thinking of the wrong illness. You want multiple personality disorder (MPD)or dissociative identity disorder.

A lot of people blame things on schizophrenia when infact whatever it is is not related or a symptom of schizo at all. As a Psychology Major, this also bothers me.

Isn't schizophrenia a more or less terribly common psychological illness, like having a cold?

It's quite common, though more involved than having a cold. I'd more likely compare depression to a cold than I should Schizophrenia.

Approximately 1 percent of the population develops schizophrenia during their lifetime – more than 2 million Americans suffer from the illness in a given year. Although schizophrenia affects men and women with equal frequency, the disorder often appears earlier in men, usually in the late teens or early twenties, than in women, who are generally affected in the twenties to early thirties (taken from http://www.schizophrenia.com/family/sz.overview.htm)

I must admit that my pride born of being educated on the subject (but apparently having lost that information) makes me less willing to visit my second favorite site. *hangs head in shame*

No need for shame. You were man enough to admit a lack of knowledge.
