Presiding Bishop Nominees

The Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop is pleased to announce the names of those bishops it will place in nomination for Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, to succeed the Most Rev. Frank Griswold. These names will be formally submitted to the General Convention at a joint session on June 18, 2006, the day prior to the day appointed for the election of the 26th Presiding Bishop by the House of Bishops. The Nominees are:

The Rt. Rev. J. Neil Alexander, Bishop of Atlanta

The Rt. Rev. Edwin F. Gulick, Jr., Bishop of Kentucky

The Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Bishop of Nevada

The Rt. Rev. Henry N. Parsley, Jr., Bishop of Alabama

The ENS Article

I'm expecting profiles will be posted shortly. Until then, I've met and had lunch with two of the four nominees (Bps. Parsley and Alexander) and ECUSA would be taking a step in the right direction with either one of them (Alexander voted for Bp. Robinson, but is otherwise orthodox; Bp. Parsley voted agin' Bp. Robinson). Bp. Parsley confirmed me, and having the good sense to do that is probably why he was nominated.

Background, medical and psychological examinations were conducted for all those nominated.
I can understand why someone with schizophrenia might not be considered, but how severe would a medical condition have to be to disquailfy a candidate? One the one hand, the Church wouldn't want someone who stands a good likelihood of keeling over dead in six months, but what about someone who is, say diabetic?

Vershal -

You misunderstand the purpose of the exams. In the medical exam they are making sure your backbone has been completely removed, as well as your testicles. The background check is to make sure you haven't been caught talking about the exclusivity of the Christian faith too much in public. And the psychological exam is given to try and make sure that you will just "go with the flow" when the time comes to all ordination of chimpanzees and elephants to the Presbyterate.

I think it would be in the nominating committee's discretion, based on the reccomendations of the doctors.
