NAMM is to musicians what Disneyland is to a child.

It's a place for vendors/builders/traders/buyers/suppliers of all-things-music to come together and work deals, present new products, discuss sales, etc...but because many of these companies generate millions of $$$ through the products they sell there's always a large number of 'stars' on-hand giving product demos, mini-concerts, Q&A sessions, and the usual autograph.
It's not uncommon to see a line formed several hundred feet long of people waiting to get a signature and a picture with a 'big name celebrity'.

I went a couple years ago to the Nashville show where ESP was introducing the Dave Mustaine signature model and we (DTS) were releasing the DVD-A of Megadeth "Peace sells..." with ESP and Mustaine.
It was a party, to say the least.

The concerts during the show can be great. You can be walking through the aisles of the show floor and catch guys like Jerry Donahue or Steve Morse jamming on their signature axe, demo'ing it for Fender or Music Man (respectively) and then have EVH giving a product demo for Peavey over here, Seymour Duncan speaking over there, the late Jim Marshall always signing autographs, and just be passing a bunch of famous players while you're walking.

The concerts at the local clubs at night can be even better. Impromtu jams occuring all over while mucky-mucks continue to wheel and deal, trying to make the "sale" with distributors and store owners.

Getting into NAMM is tough unless you know a member who is willing to swing you a pass. I went for several years under someone else's name (they don't check ID) before I finally got on "the list" but I haven't been able to go since I moved from Los Angeles in '04.
I miss going to NAMM. It is a musical eye and ear candy experience to the extreme.

You can always try to get a NAMM membership on your own but it's not cheap and, afaik, there are restrictions for the 'general public' if you're not involved in the business of music product manufacturing/selling/buying.
Just being a musician will get you nowhere. Working for a store that has membership in NAMM is a way in (if they get you a pass).
Basically, ya gotta know somebody.

For Me, Winter NAMM will mean the unveiling of many new microphones, preamps and loads of new recording gear I will drool over and never afford!

I can get in for $25.00. I am not sure if I will be able to get out there. If I can, should I?

if youre a dealer and are looking at buying 30 units at once. otherwise, dont get too excited.

anywho, somewhat off topic here, but having never been...what do the vendors think of the guests who attend? it being a place for dealers/merchants, i imagine that most of the vendors wouldnt take kindly to having "dead weight" just running around. and could this not hurt sales if the public get word of certain prototypes and such? as in, "im looking at dropping 2500$ on head x from amp brand y, but not if brand y is shipping prototype z in 3 months." type of thing. it just seems that it wouldnt really be *the worlds biggest GC.* as thats not what its intended for. if you can attend, go for it but i imagine that if i were to go, i would just sort of keep a low profile. just a thought...
