Wow, I just read the words "severed his vocal chords" (in reference to an earlier post about Killswitch Engage's former singer) and I just cringed (in horror) ><

I already posted this once, and anyone that really has substantial knowledge go ahead and correct me. This will sound stuid but if you want a Zao, Haste the Day kind of voice, drink coke or pepsi or some kind of heavily carbonated drink, it helps me get more of a throaty growl kind of voice. Again, correct me if I am giving "ill-sdvised" advice.

Carbonated beverages are not very good for your throat. Not to mention your teeth, esophagas, and stomach. That "growl" sound is probably coming from the carbonation eating away at your vocal fold.

That tone always sounded like some sick digital distortion to me.

If you want that tone just crank it up and grunt into the mic. Works every time.

As for screaming, if I do, which isn't very often and lately has been none, I just let loose in falsetto. This doesn't hurt much at all and with a distorted mic can sound very screamy and it makes everybody <del>frightened out of their wits</del> so happy.

This is a pretty old thread...

The problem with all these techniques is that you just can't get the same tone of a real scream. I'm not sure what I do, but I just scream out and I never get any pain or anything like that in my throat.

Let me give my number 1 advice again. Don't do it. If you must do it, however, see a vocal instructor.
