Alcohol Consumption? (formerly "Baptists and Drinking")

EDIT BY WILLIAM (and by Tony):
This thread was split off from the "Why Baptists are the Best" thread, and wasn't created by Tony.

Well, yeah. Baptists don't drink when other Baptists are present. We pretend to not see each other in the liquor department.

It is my sincere belief that all Baptists drink, but hide such drinking from all other Baptists.

In fairness (and continuing to be off the original thread - sorry), not all Baptist denoms are explicitly opposed to alcohol. And I believe even SBC leaders are opening up the topic for guarded discussion. But I still have memories of seeing the Church Covenant pasted in the front panel of our hymnals, and seeing the phrase “abstain from beverage alcohol” as part of our code of behavior. My grandparents’ church in Arkansas had a giant poster of it up in the fellowship hall. Some churches even adopted it into their constitution.

hmm...that's so weird...at my parents' church (independent Baptist) they preach abstinence from alcohol from the pulpit. at my church it hasn't come up, but none of the older folks i know openly drink.

Actually, at my church (and therefore my brother Vershal's former church) they preach it loud and clear. Many people there are actually militantly abstinent (from alcohol that is), but many others just sit back quietly and don't say a word when the crazies get their dander up.

I'm sure you're just using a little humor here, but we all have our pet sins that fluff our dander. That doesn't make us crazy, just inconsistent.

The "every Baptist I know" comment was more tongue-in-cheek than anything. I attend a Baptist college, and many of the students here, once they realize that alcohol might not be the evil thing that they were once told it was, tend to take it overboard, even to the point of flaunting their spiritual freedom in front of people that they know don't see it that way. It's immature, but I think a little expected.

It was completely tongue in cheek; the crazies comment was intended to be taken as a joke, though that about some being militantly abstinent was not.

baptists are notoriously hypocritical in their stances on alcohol.
