SUV's are not necessarily less balanced. Larger vehicles can be better on ice than smaller vehicles for a variety of reasons. At slow speeds, higher traction is more beneficial than the traction-to-weight ratio. At least under most icy conditions.
I don't think you quite mean what you said, but I understand the intent. That's an issue of the right tire for the right job (or are you asserting that a car is better than a person in snow-climbing boots because it's heavier?

Hey, sorry, but I don't think you're trying hard enough. I also drive an SUV (albeit a smaller one- blazer) because I have to lug around PA's, amps, guitars, etc just like you. However, I've spent only about $15 in gas the last month because I am extremely frugal about when I drive. For most of my transportation, I use a road bike older than I am that cost me $100 on ebay (*plus about $175 in maintenence over the last 2 years- it had all original parts including tires and brakes when I bought it). Furthermore, the town I live in is crazy spread out. It's not a city by any stretch of the word. Although I have a severe climate advantage, I'm sure your summer and part of spring and fall should be more than suitable for more efficient modes of transportation such as cycling.

Yes, there is a group causing these problems. It is the group that uses more gas than they need to. For example, SUV drivers that still drive their SUV's when they have more efficient alternatives. For rich people, they could have a second car that gets better gas mileage. For not rich people, they could cycle or trade their fashionable SUV in for a cheap old van and a rice-burner as a runabout.

I would consider other alternatives to gain solid ground about defending yourself in this manner.

Try a bike in a hailstorm soon-to-be tornado. That wasn't too fun

Lowest price today here in DC is $2.12 that I've seen. Out in the country of VA I've seen it at $1.96.

Price war. Several years ago before prices rose like they did, south of town there were a couple of stations hovering around $1 while the rest of the town was around $1.30
