| Poppies It is Rememberence day, and as such, everyone has been wearing poppies on their jacket, coat, or whatever. So I was wondering, what is the origin of this tradition? Is it just a Canada thing, or is it a commonwealth thing (I always associated it with England).
Thanks!
noelle

| It started in America, with Veteran's Day.

| I am American, though, and I never saw Americans walking around wearing poppies.

| I'm not sure which contry started it, so it may just be a Canadian thing, but WWI veterans began wearing real poppies as a memorial for their comrades who fell in Europe, many of whom were buried in the famously poppied fields in Flanders. Eventually the demand for real poppied outstripped the supply, so veterans' associations began making cloth ones.
I'm sure someone has better information, but I believe that's the gist of it. |

| Yeah, basically we wear poppies because of the poem. And even though it was a canadian who wrote the poem, they wear poppies in other commonwealth countries like australia. I think they may also wear them in Belgium and Holland as well because of what the Canadians did for them. |

| I had always thought it had to do with Flander's Fields.

| Here is an explanation of the wearing of poppies from the Australian Government Website: Why we wear poppies. |

| As someone who deals with rude Canadians on a daily basis, I beg to differ.
