400th Anniversary of Guy Fawkes

I know us kiwis celebrate Guy Fawkes day, but do Aussies also? It's a Brit thing, so I would guess that you guys do. If so, what did you guys do? Did you let off any fireworks, have a bon fire, or something else? Is anyone against Guy Fawkes day? Is anyone against fireworks?

Just from my general knowledge, he was a guy who planned to blow up the king, but his plan was foiled, and was charged with treason.

Here, however, is a wikipedia article with much more than I would know about it.

Because it's a good excuse for fireworks. Our only excuse, really, to simulate something blowing up.

No but I think Mum and Dad have mentioned something about fireworks on this day when they were younger.

Fireworks are pretty difficult to get over here and are mostly banned except on the Queens birthday weekend with a permit.

Haha. It is a bit of strange thing to celebrate. I don't know whether we actually celebrate the fact that he was planning to blow up parliament, or that he was caught. The old tradition was to go around with a "Guy" (a homemade, almost-lifesize model of Guy Fawkes) and then eventually burn him. Now it's moved on to fireworks.

I believe it isn't celebrated as such, in ozzie because it's banned for people to light there own.

Only public displays can be done.

I see NZ moving this way too.

If NZ were to go that way, people and businesses would be terribly upset. I can't see it ever becoming that way. It's almost a right that people are allowed to light fireworks in the same way Americans have the right to bear arms
