| Absolute Truth? Absolute Truth?
Do you believe that Jesus is the One and only way to get to Heaven? Is that true for everyone? (Hopefully Yes) If so, You've just agreed to an absolute truth. An absolute truth is something that would be true for everyone, with no exceptions. Many people believe that there are no absolute truths anymore. They believe that the culture that a person lives in decides what is right and wrong. Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy Magazine claims to be a moral guy. In an interview with Chicago Sun-Times, he was asked wether he had sinned or not. "Oh Sure," He replied, "But I haven't pursued very much immoral behavior. Now it's morality as I percieve it. Morality is what is percieved as good for people. I define it in a way that I believe to be truly humanistic and rational and loving." So WHy is Hugh Hefner Moral?" Because he said so. One study records that 64 persent of all adults in America say that truth is merely apersonal opinion. When we look at teenagers, that number goes up to 83 persent. This is in a nation where 80 percent of people claim to be Christians, and 41 claim to be born again-Christians. A lot of people view religion as a big mountain, with many ways that you can get up to the top. But thats not what Jesus taught. John 14:6 Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
The picture Jesus paints here isn't one that says he's one of many ways to get to heaven. Jesus paints a picture of a one way street. Your either headed the right way, or not. Jesus is the way. everythings else is wrong. The world tells us we're narrow minded, but we just know something they don't. The only way to heaven is to follow Jesus.
Postmodernism was explained with three baseball umpires in Os Guinness' book "Time For Truth." The three umps are disscussing various approaches to calling balls and strikes.
The First Ump represents traditional thought which accepts the concept of absolute truth. "There are balls and strikes." He says, "and I call them the way they are."
The Second Ump representing modern philosophy with subjective tendencies, denounces the first as arrogrnt and asserts, "There are balls and strikes, and I call them the way I see them."
The third Ump, representing postmodern thought, dismisses the first two and declares, "There are balls and there are strikes, but they ain't nothing untill I call them."
The world largly sees religion in the view of the second or third ump. The second one is the person who sees the bible as open to interpritation. It was no longer absolute.
The third ump view all morality as subjective. Whatever you think is right, is right for you. To us that view the Bible as our moral code, this is confusing. All it is in essence is a sophisticated attempt by modern man to justify immoral behavior and relieve a guilty conscience.
But as Christians, we know that there IS a moral code thats just as true to everyone here on Earth. The Bible applies to everyone of us. |
