I mean, seriously. It's more of a donation than a payment; it just comes with a few extra perks. It's like belonging to the National Wildlife Society or whatnot. You give them some money; they give you something worth a little less so they're actually getting some of your money; they keep doing what they do; you get to keep enjoying what they do. Makes sense to me.

Heck, why do you pay for cable (assuming you do)? CGR is a lot more entertaining, and a lot cheaper!

I believe you are misquoting there... Socrates never said any such thing. Archemidies is reputed to have said something similar to that though.
